So, my computer, which I spent about 2-3 grand on a few years ago, has been sitting idle for the past 6-7 months.

For a while, it was just so full of useless shit that I didn't want to bother with it. Then I tried to reformat, and figured out that I don't have the CD key for windows, and it just ended up being not used. Too much of a cheap **** to get a new Key (yes, 10 bucks is really that painful), too much of a lazy/paranoid **** to both with pirating.

Shit's getting tough for my mom at work though, so I can't use her laptop anymore. Posting this from an Ubuntu Live CD atm, and i'm actually digging it. I like how I just pop this ****ing CD in here and i've suddenly got an OS that just does shit. I used to be a total ****ing nerd, spending my free time optimizing my system and cleaning up my wiring, if not just playing games and posting on HL2.net. But I think i've changed, I haven't even thought about a video game in months (Skate 2 doesn't count), so i'm thinking linux might be the ticket.

Thinking about installing to HDD. Anything I should know before I go through with it? Ubuntu seems like the "lol dumbass" ver of linux, any recommendations for other distros?

Only true nerds are Linux developers, go talk to one about developing linux and you'll see why :p

Ubuntu is a pretty solid choice, good start if you only have experience with linux distros by using GUI. You should also try Xubuntu and Kubuntu if you don't like Gnome.

If I didn't want to play games, I wouldn't use Windows. I've recently installed Xubuntu on a couple of computers for family members (who just want to search the Internet and check email), and, it doesn't really screw around.

Windows hasn't ever given me the kind of grief I hear about online since 3.1, so I don't know what everyone is on about, but Linux is definitely a tighter ride.
