Any Linux users here? How do you feel about it?

I love Linux.. the best way I can describe it is -
"Linux assumes your smart, so its easy to do stupid things. Windows assumes your stupid so its hard to do smart things."

I use Gentoo Linux and it's possibly the best distro out there if you want to be able to customize everything.
Gnome vs KDE
Windows vs *nix

/me puts flamesuit on.

When I get my portable hdd, i'm thinking of putting a portable linux on it just for fun.

Yes. I feel good.

Fedora Core
KDE
Windows for games, Linux for development

Fedora/Redhat ... LOL @ YOU!!! j/k, but I really dislike those distros..

Arch
Flux

Gentoo is cute if you want to pretend "your smart" and know what all the compile flags do and then go show off how "1337 your".

Fedora, just say no.

Oh, yes, I think we all can see that Linux and Windows separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to intelligent people.

;) eof

I just started using linux about a month ago, installed mandrake 10.1 x86-64. Its pretty cool although I'm having a right job getting my wireless lan card detected. It works fine if I load up knoppix on disc, but the ndiswrapper module can't see the wlan card in mandrake :/

Fluxbox is really ghay.

I really dislike the fact right click the desktop takes you to everything.. hmm lazy? and tbh it looks like crap.

I don't use Linux because I'm lazy and compatability issues piss me off.

Yeah.

Slim driver support is what scares me away.

You should try out knoppix, you will be surprised what it picks up hardware wise, and how ready it is to use for general tasks like browsing, listening to music, watching movies etc. I was really quite surprised how much stuff was there, its quite impressive.

I'm speaking of gaming.

Oh right, oh well you should try it out anyway :D I think its quite cool to just boot up the cd and have a play around with all the stuff.

Well, in that case, what would be the best distro to do it on?

I've always wanted to take Linux for a test drive :D

EDIT: WEE HOOM AH MOTHER****ERS!!!! 1,000th post!!!

*passes around mountain dew*

You can play games with Cedega (steam works perfectly), but the performances are not that good, plus DX9 is still not supported yet (last time I checked).

All you need to do is goto http://www.knoppix.net/ , download the iso, burn it, and then boot up from the cd. It will take a couple of mins to start since all teh stuff is on cd, but when its up and running, its pretty cool. You can even save a small config file on a harddisc so when you go back into knoppix, you can have all your changes you made. Its pretty sweet, it was seeing knoppix on a mates pc that made me download and install mandrake on my own pc!

If you are unfamiliar with Linux and are afraid to try installing, you could always try DSL(Damn Small Linux--It's only 50 megabytes!). You can run it under Windows and still try out the seemingly endless possibilities of Linux. It just runs in its own window and you can download all the apps you need--that's a TON of functionality for a fraction of the price of Windoze--its free!

And if you like it and are feeling a little more adventurous, you can boot directly into it from, say, your jump drive. Simple and powerful. Enjoy!

Don't forget you can download any linux distro off the bit torrent. ISPs got no excuse throttling you down there, cuz its legal. I get 230kb/sec++ when downloading distros, other files don't seem to be so fast for me.

The ISP isn't throttling you down. You have to download off other users remember. A lot more people have linux distros than any other file.

Gentoo is cute eh! You know what else is cute your post.

Running any OS doesn't mean shit if you don't know how to use more than one command prompt or console at a time. I'm tempted to test those two distros you posted on my Beowolf cluster and do a few Pov-Ray benchmarks but meh my setup works like a dream.

What's that have to do with Arch?

Flux isn't a distro. You might want to try calling up Lynx on one of your multiple command prompts and navigating to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluxbox or http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/.

What I meant by ISP throttling down, I hear that certain ISPs, i think US but not too sure, have been throttling the ports that is used widely by the Bit Torrent.

It was also a half-sarcastic comment :p

Oh, I use Fedore Core 4 for hosting dedicated servers. just a shame ADSL only gives you 288Kbps upload with 2Mbps download. rather limiting to like 8 players on Call of Duyt.

If memory serves correct... Cable would have even slower upload speeds.

I was just considering gettin a T1 link, looked into it . . . about $200 a month . . . . thats quite a bit of money . . . . . maybe when Im a bit older, Il come to some deals with the neighbours to share the connection :)

Ti133700N from what I read about WineX or Wine, it does seem to have DX9 support. From the guides I read, it supports Steam just about perfectly. Havent personally tried it yet. I use FC4 for serving for me and my mates.

Knoppix is also a good CD to have with you, it has already saved my life, especially when Windows installer messed up my active partitions, you can use the tools in Knoppix to sort it all out.

Infact, Knoppix detects everything perfectly, and is sound and internet ready without any work at all, with windows theres the installing of all drivers (sound, LAN, video even) then there is still telling it HOW to access the internet.

It really looks like Linux is gonna be ahead of it all.

WineX is now Cedega and wine (free version) doesn't work very well with Source games. However, yes Cedega let you run Steam correctly but you can't play games in DX9. That means no super duper high quality water. Still looks good anyway there is not a huge difference between DX8 & DX9. I do have tried it, CS 1.6 is still fun :) but there is a crackling sound when you shoot that is anoying.

Why not just use the UBCD4Windows? I've already used it once to fix a botched driver install (I didn't restart, so one of the driver files didn't get moved, and I couldn't boot into windows).
