Does anyone know where I could find a version of linux that runs on this:
P1 266mhz
64 mb SIMM RAM (16x4)
1.27 gb HD
A very, very, very bad video card.

Im building a cheap comp in school. Ive always wanted to learn the basics of Linux so I figured...

you could always try one of those distros that run completely off of a cd, like knoppix. i'm not sure if that's what you're looking for though...

Yeah, Im downloading Knoppix now. Anyone use it? If so how easy is it to learn?

it's super easy, just pop it in and go. it's definately the best way to learn cuz if you have a problem it won't damage your system at all.

Knoopix's system requiremnts are much higher than what you have there.....

That system will perhaps run Windows 95.

The computers we used at school in my computer programming class had much lower specs then that system and they had Windows 98 on them.

Forget Knoppix, it loads itself into a RAM disk and you do not have enough. Wouldn't try Gentoo, either. I'd go with Debian, its basic configuration is manual and it will serve you well if your intention is learning how the system works.

Run mandrake if your getting annoyed with Linux (easier), or you could try "Damn Small Linux" which is 50mb and has GUI, programs...the works

Knoppix is basically debian with KDE, it'll run fine on a 266.

Have fun!
