To open up console you have to first enable it in the options menu. Then hit the <~> button while you're playing.
ie:
type
<cl_showfps 1> will display framerates or frames per second (fps) near top of the screen.
<cl_showfps 0> will stop displaying framerates
Warning: I found that if my resolution was set low (800x600), the fps display didn't show up on the screen.
If anyone finds a more complete list of console commands, or can explain them, feel free to reply and I will try to add to my original post.
