You can use the same version, but you will have to download steam on your 2nd PC and you can't play it on both at once.

ok I bought another copy of HL2 and installed it on my 2nd pc. Now we are unable to connect to the same server. I can create an LAN server and we can play with Bots but both of us connecting to an internet game is a nogo. I dont understand why we cant. I have Guild Wars installed on both pc's and we play with no problems... what gives?

You didn't have to buy another copy of the game. All you had to do was to download Steam again from http://www.steampowered.com and enter your CD Key from your original game. >_<

It does sound as though this is the case.

Did you put the new copy of HL2 onto your existing Steam account Logrey69? If so, you *may* be able to contact Valve to have it removed, but I'm not 100% confident on that.

I hope you made a new steam account for the second copy.

If you merely added the new CD-Key to your original account, there's not much you can do. You can play online, on both PCs at once, but you can't be in the same server. My brother and I use the same Steam account (MY steam account, but I'm nice) at the same time all the time; we just can't be in the same online server.

those are for setting up on 2 computers
however you cannot both be online at the same time with one cd key
