Thanks ne1 for the help

Have you tried verifying your cache files? Right-click the game in Steam and go to Properties, it's somewhere in there.

have you tried changing some of the graphics settings? That might help.

I did the cache. I changed the graphic settings. Nothing does anything. Its relaly annoying. It wasnt doing it before it just started after i fixed it =(.

ive seen a thread before here and i believe it was fixed. those boxes around it are usually meant for developers. a simple console command should fix it.

Try updating your graphics card drivers as well, and see if that will help. If this doesn't work, though it may not fix it, go into your /Steam/SteamApps/YOURUSERNAME/ folder, and delete the Half-Life 2 folder and then launch the game.

that last part is his best bet

IM about to go to school but i was looking at my graphic drivers last night and heres tyhe deal. According to steam my graphic drivers are out of date.. But according to the nvidia website there the newest drivers they have. Soo idk hounestly. The gfx card is 5 days old and i got the drivers when i instaleld it directly from the website. Ill delete the hl2 folder when i ge home and try it. Thanks for the responses guys

Steam is notorious for that stupid 'Your Graphics Drivers are Out of Date' thing when they're not.

Wow, this one got forgotten.

BTW, I recently had this problem, but then I set the launch option "-dxlevel 80" it removed the white X's, I'm yet to see any other side effects from lowering the DXlevel on it.

Note, any smilies below are supposed to be a colon followed by a capitol D

If the "-dxlevel 80" does not work for you:

--Try this second(if dxlevel 80 fails)
I remember this being something for developers as well as someone previously mentioned - but I may be wrong. These are generally toggled in the console, or the command line. Double check your command line, if you have any developer switches (sometimes enabled for cheating if you do in single player).

Also, many of the configuration commands in the console are saved in two locations (I think they're mutually exclusive, I don't know if any are mirrored). The first location is "%programfiles%\Steam\Steamapps\USERNAME\Half-Life 2\hl2\cfg\config.cfg". This file should've been deleted when you cleared that folder. I believe you can delete just this file, and next time you run the game it will be regenerated with default settings.

The second location that you probably did not check is in the registry at "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Source\hl2". Under the Source key, there will be keys for every source game. You can look at those saved settings and see if anything is off - or you could delete the whole key "hl2" - (BE CAREFUL! KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DELETING - DO NOT DELETE "VALVE", "SOFTWARE" or anything else - just "hl2" and other affected Source games). What you will be deleting will be the "folder" in the tree view on the left hand side of "Regedit". If you don't know what I'm talking about, either let google teach you how to use it, or don't bother.

If you delete the key in the registry, next time you run the game, it will need to be reconfigured (graphics, sound, etc...). It should default to the recommended settings. Try that first - see if x's go away. If they do, then put up the settings to taste and make sure the x's stay away.

--Try this third(if dx 80 and the above method fail)
This is experimental, see note below!
If all else fails, and you have an nVidia card (dunno for ATI, my last (and first) ATI card was the Radeon 32mb back when HL1 was the shiznit) Search the registry for "hl2.exe:D3D". Find the ones stored in the relative path "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\...". Edit the "hl2.exe" part of the found values so that they become "hl2.bak:D3D" (something that doesn't exist, and you can easily change back if it doesn't work). Note that you will find multiple results like "_counter-strike source/hl2.exe:D3D_32661390", only change the ones for your game like "_half-life 2/hl2.exe:D3D_####" to "_half-life 2/hl2.bak:D3D_####" (if half-life 2 is the affected game)

See if that fixes it - that will prevent the nVidia driver from overriding gfx settings (which it's supposed to do for compatibility, although sometimes it has adverse effects). This change will not be permanent - I think it's every restart the driver rewrites the preprogrammed defaults or some other interval.

Experimental note: I've only seen a graphics problem once on HL2 that was fixed this way. I don't remember what the exact glitch was, or what card it was for (either a geforce 5 or 6 series). And it was about 2 years ago, nVidia may have fixed that issue. I no longer support that machine, so I have no idea if the user still has the issue.
