After two days of very little sleep, and much reading on many forums...I have gathered the knowledge to make Half-Life 2 run on my laptop at 60 fps, 1024 X 768, and all settings on high...

My specs...
1.5 Ghz
Nvidia Geforce420 Go - SIXTEEN MEGABYTES MEMORY

(let me say it again to let it sink in)

SIXTEEN MGBTYS of MEMORY!
and 256 ram

it runs great! Thanks valve for giving us an engine that kicks ass on all computers, regardless of how much tweaking it takes...

hmm nice, maybe a screenshot and some info about how you did it, then you could make a very nice thread, what your saying now is nothing, we need more information

O great Hoontar, you are veritably a god among tweakers.

We implore you, look favorably on us your worshippers and bestow upon us the sacred Mysteries, the inscrutable knowledge of your labor.

weirdo :dork:

Go on how did ya do it? Did you totally reconfigure all the memory settings and that or and hamsters or something?

tell, tell

Maybe the 420go uses shared memory? But one there is one slight problem: the 420go does not support the pixel shader 1.4 spec, let alone ps2.0, so how does he run it on high? Or is he using high settings for dx7 mode?

Its gonna be dx7, not 9, so its not really full graphics

yeah, directx 7.0 is what it's on...so your right - it's not COMPLETELY perfect, but it looks damn pretty regardless. The trick for me was using OMEGA DRIVERS instead of my graphic cards normal drivers. Oddly enough, I origionally had 512 ram, but had to take one 256 chip out to get rid of the "cannot read memory" error...Ironic because I'm worsening my specs to make this game run...Anyways, after I got the omega drivers, i seem to be able to put the ram back in which greatly improved my framerate. Also, the main menu wasn't working so I put in the command "-console" in the "launch properties" in steam which disables the fancy main menu, replacing it with simply a blurred screenshot as the background.

What really suprises me about these next gen engines, notably Source + ID's Doom 3 engine, is that they not only have better graphics, but they bring them to lesser systems...Take Halo for pc, that game had good graphics, but ran like crap on my system...a well optimized game like HL2 or Doom 3 have MUCH better visuals AND they run well on my computer...And one more thing, DON'T EVER BUY A LAPTOP WITH INTEGRATED VIDEO CARD...and if you do, MAKE IT A DAMN GOOD CARD, CAUSE UR STUCK WITH IT...I learnt my lesson the hard way...

Ok im recycling this from one of my old posts but here is the way to get your laptop to share the RAM-

This is possible, though you are using a laptop (known as lowwave portable computer to experts). However you are going to need to alter the quadra signals on your motheboard in order to allow for the alpha and beat streams to waveshift to a higher diga-frequency. To do this you must find your original BOTO floppy that came with the laptop, enter this and run abcneg.exe. This will open a console, type in-
initit abc deg//
you this will display a series of code you dont need to understand, however when it displays and only when it displays "abc deg aplht ready" hit the Enter button. This will open a new window with some more numbers in, type
shift 19559305630-3454534-454544 toup>< 48239284343-34343
hit enter again and wait until data stops appearing. Then type whatever FMD super channel the RAM you wish to use is on, you may need to look at the maual. Hit enter and your done.
