“If an officer sees someone taking pictures of something like a refinery,” says [Police Chief Jim McDonnell], “it is incumbent upon the officer to make contact with the individual.” McDonnell went on to say that whether said contact becomes detainment depends on the circumstances the officer encounters.

McDonnell says that while there is no police training specific to determining whether a photographer’s subject has “apparent esthetic value,” officers make such judgments “based on their overall training and experience” and will generally approach photographers not engaging in “regular tourist behavior.”

lol a police officer is somehow qualified to judge whether a photo is esthetically pleasing or not? there are no terrorist photographers only terrorists with cameras

Modders getting references for textures are going to be screwed if this kind of policy gets common. Also, I think that's a pretty cool photo.

But people take photos for lots of reasons other than aesthetics. Anyway, I think that photo is beautiful. I've set it as my desktop background.
 
I've said it before and I'll say it again, America is turning into a police state. Just last week, cellphone towers around the Bay Area Rapid Transit were disabled to stop a protest gathering.

Wow, I can't believe how stupid this is. I've taken plenty of photos in my town, either for textures, or urban exploration/industrial images like the example above. One time there were cops right there while I was taking photos of various buildings, surfaces, etc, and they didn't give a ****. This is ridiculous.
 
But this isn't really a recent thing. Ever since 9/11 stuff like this has been going on. Google through photo.net's forums (or any photo enthusiast site) for stories going back the past 10 years. It was ridiculous right after the attacks and it's ridiculous 10 years later that this kind of behavior persists.
 
It's the New World Order taking away your freedoms. I mean, you're not allowed to take photos anymore?
 
inb4 police hate hipsters taking pictures of dilapidated buildings

Frankly, I'd like to see the police step up this kind of policy and arrest people who have no aesthetic value.
 
New rule: you can't enforce policies that you can't spell.
