Those 'security module' things used to only take me about 5-10 seconds to download, but, recently, it's been taking 25-30 seconds! Why the sudden jump? It's not just me, but it's not everyone I've talked to, either.

So... what gives? Can I make it fast again? :)

I usually just minimize it now when I'm joining a new server and come here or something because I'm not what you would call a patient person when it comes to these types o' things! :E

the one thing u might want to do is go into ur settings and click on the "Internet" tab and make sure the proper connection speed is selected.

what i find is some times after an update, it automatically changes to the default "Modem - 14.4k" setting which is not what i use.

the slower speed causes downloads to be slower.. so just a heads up for that :)

I'll be damned... that was it! :D

Thank you muchly, Dr. Freeman!

Oh, and wow, that's stupid. :rolling:

np buddy :)
its stupid...and took me 3 full days to realize it.
at one point i got so mad at the lag i was getting in-game that i was about to call my cable company and someone (whoever would be on the other side of the line) some serious hell

but i held onto my sanity for the last few things.. looking through Windows and eventually Steam to see if any settings were different.

just make sure u peak at the settings every once in a while to make sure things are spiffy :E

Somtimes its because steam is updating other stuff.... Thats what generally causes it for me..

To further Freeman's advice, if you have cable, Letters, I'd suggest setting these rates in your console:

rate 25000
cl_updaterate 100
cl_cmdrate 100

Basically, the "Internet connection" dropdown box simply changes the "rate" command. I believe T1 is set to 10000 (could be wrong, going from memory). This is still too low for most broadband users, especially cable.

The other commands also help control the flow of packets being sent and received. The defaults are too low for most broadband users (again, especially cable) and should be adjusted.

The settings I mentioned above are tried and true for cable users, DSL users might want to try something lower (ie, rate 20000, cl_cmd/updaterate 100)

Shuzer, indulge an idiot; do you know the optimal rates for a 56ker? Currently on "rate 3000" (as, like most, I connect at a maximum of 44kbps to my ISP and at around 190-260 ping to a server on average).

Getting sick of Steam's issues; servers that were fine weeks ago are now too laggy to play on. On top of it all, DoD's started its unstoppable download again. And I keep encountering servers where, on joining, I'll be voted off after three minutes. If you don't like dial-up users put it in your MOTD or just block them you bastards! And people who put rate limits on servers can at least say so! It makes my modem explode!

*ahem*

why can't steam save the security modules and then just simply load them the next time you connect to that server?

I'm gonna wanna say

rate 5000
cl_updaterate 20
cl_cmdrate 20

I'm a little fuzzy on the cmd/updaterate settings, but try aiming for lower numbers (if 20 is laggy, go to 30, and work your way down from there)

5000 seems to be about the optimal rate for 56k

Wow, I'm just getting all sorts of help now! :D

Thank you muchly to Shuzer now! Wow, I've yet to try it actually in-game, but I've never gotten my server lists so fast in my LIFE! :O Jeebus... :D
