Look up and down doesn't work in HL2 episode 1

I bought an xbox 360 controller and set the keys accordingly, however no matter if I set the look up and look down keys to my controller axis or to any key on my keyboard it just doesn't work. I push the keys and nothing no up or down... any suggestions on why this is happening, or how to fix this problem, kinda hard to play, not being able to look up or down...

Stupid question - did you check "enable joystick" in the options menu?

yeah and no... and all that does is preconfig the left thumbstick to look up and down or whatever, but it won't even let me use my keyboard to look up or down, it says that the keys have been entered like lookup = up arrow (or pos axis on my controller) but nothing... The enable joystick does nothing that I have noticed accept mess with my thumbstick settings on my controller, I can use my controller with that checked off or not.

Only Portal, Episode Two and TF2 are compatible with controllers at the moment.

actually, oh, nvm, i was thinking of synergy, mods are different than the orignials. never mind me, and try to just use your keyboard, if that works, then its all fine, wast wrong with a keyboard? just use it

Yeah. Personally, I've been playing HL2 on the Xbox,
[HL2 on Xbox > No HL2]
And its a hella lot harder to aim than with the mouse.
Better than nothing.
For certain games, I prefer a controller, [Racing games.. and uhm.. Third person Shooters.] but keyboard and mouse win.

Ummm... I can use a controller with halflife 2 episode 1, because I did it... have all the keys set and everything, all the buttons work for what I set them to do, the only thing I can not get to work is look up and look down, and I would use a keyboard, except again, it doesn't matter what I set to be look up or down, doesn't matter if it is the key board (a-z) what ever, or the controller, nothing works for look up and look down, it says in the settings that it is set, however the corresponding key when pressed doesn't work.

I do not enjoy playing games with a keyboard because I often find I press the wrong key in the heat of the moment, and don't use a health pack when I really needed one, and I have my computer hooked up to my plasma, so I do not have a desk and my hands and wrists get sore.

Does no one have this game and have encountered this problem, open it up and try to program look up and down, and you will not be able to do it garanteed.

There has to be a way to fix this problem....

So far, it seems to be any Source engine game - HL2 Deathmatch and Portal have the same problems as well.

Have you installed driver if they exist?

No drivers are necessary. This is a regular keyboard, it just happens to be that, no matter what button Look Up and Look Down is bound to, it just doesn't work. Even going into the Dev Console and entering the command manually doesn't work (+lookup or +lookdown).
