Off to the states next year for a holiday with some family and we've decided to hire a camper van, having done it before on previous holidays and much preferring it to staying in hotels and hiring rental cars.

So I was wondering if any of our American members, or other members who have hired campers in the states (or just know anyone who has done so) could recommend a good company to hire from? We've been shafted before by a company in Australia and don't really want to go through anything like that again so we'd rather go with a more reputable, well known company. We'll probably be hiring one from San Fransisco if that helps, I'm not sure if the states has localized companies or national companies or what.

Thanks!

I've only had experience with car rentals. On that note, if they provide campers...I'd go with Hertz.

I suggest looking for reviews.

If you're coming in from out of the country, I highly suggest you buy the insurance that the rental company offers you. My mother has been renting cars for several years now, and she took it when she rented a car recently.

Yeah insurance will be a must. When camping in Australia, Dad obliterated the air-con unit on the roof when parking in a petrol station and upon returning to New Zealand, noticed the company owner had changed the policy to only cover damage up to a certain height. Luckily we had a copy of the original policy.

I'm sure a large professional company wouldn't try anything like that though.

I have no experience renting campers/RVs but any major commercial chain of rental vehicles should do the trick.

Where are you guys going? There are so many awesome places you can go camping all across the US... if you guys are starting out in California, you could head north to yosemite, northwest to Yellowstone, or southwest to the Grand Canyon or Zion Canyon or any of the other infinite beautiful places we have in the west. I've been all over the country on camping trips, if you guys want any suggestions for additions to your itinerary let me know :D

Thanks!

We're heading to Illinois first for a week to visit my brother and his family, which is the main purpose of the trip, but we figured we'd fly out to San Fransisco after we've seen them and head down to LA over a couple of weeks. Yosemite and the Grand Canyon are on the agenda but we're only looking into things at the moment, if you have any recommendations feel free to PM me, all we've got to go on are tourism sites atm :p
