Ok, I tried a search on this but couldnt find anything. Anyways, I regularly lurk the Polycount forums, and come in here occasionally to look at models. Anyways, its always been a really big interest of mine. I always wanted to learn how to model, but I never did. Anyways, My question is, are there any good free modeling programs I can try? If so what are their links? Even if you can re-direct me to annother thread which might have this info I would really appreciate it!

That'll do it. Give it a go and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Anyway, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. There are plenty of us here that are willing to help beginners out.

Thanks a lot. I think im gonna start by making a model of my airsoft rifle which is a DPMS (not to be mistook for an M4)

EDIT: Oh and anyone know any good tutorial sites for GMAX? I looked in the sticky and couldnt find anything for Gmax.

Here are some g-max tutorials that ive found. I dont use g-max.. i use 3ds max so i dont really know how good or bad these tutoirals are but they seem good, so here is the link to them http://www.bluefinmicro.com/~garyp/trainz/gmaxtutorials.htm , oh and g-max is used to really make models for games.. so if you were planning to model for a game then good.. but if you were planning to do some art or something then you should really find a new program.. maya.. 3ds max.. or something becuase g-max you can't render and whole bunch of stuff.

there be some tutorials on the gmax webby ... same place where you download gmax they are pritty good amd are pritty detailed you will pic up the basics quick

or you can get a realy high quality modelling program, XSI Experience

That's subjective. The program used is only as good as the artist that uses it.

Sure, but then it does help. What would you prefer? MSPaint or Photoshop? :D

Apples and oranges. Obviously the high level programs are going to be better than the lightweights.

Quite correct, so like the man said... you can get the really high quality program XSI|EXP with its high end modeller...

:D

just one more, question, how do I get a reference image into the viewports? Like the one I showed above.

Look for tutorials on that, there's a very good one at suurland.com .

Basically you make a plane and a material with the pic as diffuse map and then you use the material on the plane.

Diffuse map = the standard map.
