the major competition for Half-Life 2.

Im sick of all these damn "Halo 2 vs Half-life 2" threads and arguments going on. Why do major games always have to compete?

We should just be able to enjoy both games.

Both have had years of work into them, they are both going to be great games, they each have great new innovative gameplay, great graphics and sound, and giant fanbases.

Why do the fans have to fight? Why cant we just all win? Its not like you are limited to one game. I know money may be an issue, but If you really want a game I'm sure theres work you can do somewhere to get cash.

I really like synth's signature;

"In the war between Half-Life 2 and Doom 3, the biggest winners are the Gamers."

I think that applies to all major games, including the Half-Life 2 / Halo 2 situation going on right now.

Polls are stupid, just playing favorites. Thats when you get pointless one-sided arguments, and once you are influenced by one side its like the other is the enemy in a lot of cases. I'm sure many people are with me on the "both games are splendiferous!!" idea. I guess all elective processes are like this (Presidential Elections / Constitiutional Amendments / etc...)

Some people get too one-sided too quickly.

Anyone with me? I was bored and felt like typing something up.

I'm with ya SpuD. :)

I've been trying to show people that Halo and Half-Life are both great. I've been at this for months.

They are both great games, and their sequels will be too.

I think if you have the equipment to at least play these great games coming out, you should.

Even if you have money invested in Valve or Activision or ID or EA, you still sell yourself short by not trying a game simply because of whatever reason you may have.

But, people still fight, claim one better than the other and still don't realize they're not speaking fact. Just play the games. Thats what they're here for. I, for one, will probobly own Halo 2, HL2, MP2, and MGS3..as far as November goes. :E

What's the matter Half-Life fanboys? Starting to sweat? Mahahaha!

...

Just kidding. Both will rock.

*TS walks on deck with a peg leg, parrot, hat, boots, hook, and a patch*

YAR! Halo 2 be bad! *Pokes*

Half-Life 2, be good! *Raises hook into the air*

Yes... Yes indeed...
That is, if Doom 3 was actually a good game. Halo 2 will be another story, I'm sure.

yeah, doom 3 sucked, but Halo 2 will be good

Doom 3 is a classic example of what happens to a game when it has so much hype, heritage and legacy wrapped around it. Doom 3, indeed, sucked. I scream everytime someone mentions the PC Gamer review -- 95%. It does NOT, I repeat, IT DOES NOT deserve the rating it received. What makes me puke my dinner up, eat it again, crap it out and repeat the process all over is the final quote PC Gamer gave Doom 3, "The bar has been raised, lets see who passes it"... Or whatever it said word-for-word. Raised the bar my arse. Doom 3 just took scare tactics to a higher level and that's about it. Doom 3 was like one of those hokey haunted houses at theme parks where you sit in a train or car and things jump out to scare you. Doom 3 received all the hype, praising and ratings because it is simply 'Doom' and id, nothing really more. Been there, done it.

I enjoyed the first Halo more than I enjoyed Doom 3.

Sorry.... I felt the urge to vent that out....

Concurs. Some of it is okay by me for fun criticism or comparisons. But, when it runs rampant and it's just the same thing over and over, "Blah, blah, your game sucks, mine is better!!!", then it makes my head implode.

I say "I told you so" to every Doom 3 fanboy I see. I said it sucked from the beginning... it sucked, and I win. I am better than them for knowing that a game would suck before it ever came out! hah! :(

How did a thread that started out with:

"Why do major games always have to compete?"

Turn into a Doom 3 bashing thread?

I agree with the general consent that Doom 3 sucked. Its big technological features (Dynamic lightmapping and normal mapping are the only ones I can think of.) were already featured in Deus Ex: Invisible War. The graphics were bleh; not very impressive visually. I hated how the levels were small and tight which means that enemies could back you into a corner and rape the ever living life out of you.

Now in the case of Halo 2 I'm slightly apathetic about it since the first Halo was alright. What really drives me to get Halo 2 is that it looks to be more story-centric than the first. (Personally I think that the game's narrative is weak especially in comparison to the novels which tell the story better than the game.)

2004 has been a great year for games. This season especially. San Andreas, Halo 2, Half-Life 2, Metroid Prime 2, Prince of Persia 2, Vampire and many others. In the end there's something for everybody so we should drop these silly gaming feuds, pull up a chair, share a pizza and happily frag each other in harmony.

Because I'm mentally unstable. Good enough?

I will play both, but I know for a fact that Halo 2 will be a lot better.

How many novels are there and are they worth the time to read?

There are three novels thus far:

The Fall of Reach - Prequel to Halo. Tells the story of the Master Chief and how he became the man we know him as.

The Flood - The novelization of Halo.

First Strike - Takes place between Halo and Halo 2. The Master Chief along with a few survivors of Reach learn that the Covenent has discovered Earth's location and set out to make a first strike in hopes of delaying the attack.

All three are very good and I would definitely recommend them.

The ironic truth: I thought I would be the only person to not like Doom 3 when it came out. I just didn't appeal to me. The way the game was played, portraid, and executed but...

I freakin' love it and everyone hates it. How the hell did that happen?

The Fall of Reach was BY FAR my favorite. The others were good though.

i'm trying to find a store/library that has them around here (bris, australia), no luck so far ..

nb: i have no way to purchase online unless i convince my parents (credit cards) .. which i haven't been very successfull at.

It's simple:
Half-life 2 is the PC's killer app and Halo 2 is the X-box's killer app. I'm sure both are going to be great games. (with HL2 being the superior-oh wait there's my bias again...)

I know, i totally agree. The worst part about it is being told you're wrong for having that opinion. It makes you just want to step up and deck the person saying it.

I wish people would just stop and enjoy the games for a change.

Spud...it's been almost an entire year since last Christmas. However, you still use the Santa hat avatar. You might as well keep it for the next two months huh?

doom 3 sucked as a shooter but the atmosphere it created was the best ever and it wasnt meant to be a great shooter it was just the first DOOM with bummped up graphics physics and all that nothing different.

i have preordered halo 2 and im going to preorder hl2 as soon as possible then once im finished with them sum splintercell chaos theory will be up :)....

You can only attach your fragile ego to one thing at a time, that's why kids need to choose a side.

In reply to "Why Do Major Games Have to Compete?"

Especially since these two games are on DIFFERENT platforms, therefore a somewhat different fanbase.

Not to mention the gameplay is really different. Halo offers much more use of Vehicles in both Multiplayer and Singleplayer.

As of right now, HL2 only offers it in Singleplayer...And not really a major amount of it...the buggy is mostly, with the odd gun-boat thing and one more. Who knows, we could be in for a surprise though.

They're just such different games! The only games that should be compared are HL2/Doom3, and we all know which will/SHOULD be the better game in that battle to the death.

You can't really compare the 2 games, they are each made for a different audience.

I'm getting both. Bought HL2 Silver on Steam, and pre-ordered Halo 2 Limited Edition. Rock on!

Halo2 PC is not far, that is a PC's killer app as well

Gorgon, I wouldn't say so.
With upcoming games...
I don't really think Halo 2 would be able to compete on a Pc level. As with upcoming games like Stalker, Oblivion, FEAR, etc... Plus gearbox might screw it all up.
But I will agree that Halo 2 will be good, has done good with the limits of the Xbox, and will be very fun and it will own all the other xbox games.
I also agree that HL2 will own every pc game out there onsept Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. After all, who could own that?

HALFLIFE 2 OWNZ0rZ HALO 2

Bias bias bias bias bias bias bias bias bias bias bias

I agree with teh SpudMan.

I agree whit spud

I am fan of Hl2 and halo2

Argh, i've heard this way to many times. HALO 2 ISNT COMING OUT ON PC! And if it ever does, its not going to be in the next year or two. This is XB's main selling game, they're not going to port it until they have made some serious $$ off of it. When sales slow down, they'll probably port it to PC, just to get a few extra bucks. But...halo just isnt meant to be played on a PC..and this is coming from a hardcore PC gamer. I like chillin' on my couch and playing a game on a 42" HDTV for a change.

i like doom 3 and i want to play halo 2 but im not a console person and will wait for it to get on pc. I think that valve put a lot more work in hl2 then bungie did with halo 2. I also feel hl2 is way better then halo 2.

Agreed, agreed, agreed, agreed.

I could care less about Halo 2s singleplayer. However, the multiplayer aspect is what I really think I'm going to LOVE. Me and my buddies have spent countless hours playing with/against each other. We talk, we play, and we just hang out. It's awsome. And now with Halo 2 going Live, the thought of having that same casualness while not giving away all my food or watching them tear up my house if enough to make me crap my pants.
