When I first heard Pandemic were developing a LotR game, I immediately assumed RPG. It seemed perfect; massive fantasy world, the film licences and a dedicated fanbase that pretty much guarantees massive sales. It could be the only possible choice.

Apparently not.

Eeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

I'm not usually one to badmouth a game before it's release, but this has seriously disappointed me as a gamer and a LotR fan. Firstly as a gamer from being denied the chance of a much-needed new RPG, and secondly as a LotR fan by hearing I can play as Sauron.

My hope for a LotR RPG has now been utterly destroyed. And I know about LotRO, but I'm not a fan of MMOs and always wanted to see Middle Earth created with full modern graphical power.

Erm, AFAIK Pandemic have like no experience at all with RPGs.. So why exactly you'd expect an RPG from them is beyond my understanding..

Sure, officially speaking Bioware and Pandemic have merged, but they're still very different dev groups, and even within the Pandemic Studios group there are several dev teams, there's the Mercs team, the Star Wars team(Doing the new LOTR game), and several others..

I know of Pandemic's history, I simply never imagined LotR to be turned into anything else but an RPG. My expectations of the game have gone from passion project to movie cash-in.

I desperately want an RPG like Baldur's Gate or FFXII in the LOTR universe too, but this should be some pretty wicked fun while we wait. Being evil and marauding across the shire? Yes please!! :)

That game sounds pretty fun imo.

War in Middle-Earth is the closest we will probably ever get to an epic LOTR RPG (with some great RTS elements). It is still in my top 10 games of all-time. Win the war of the ring in any fashion you like!!

Yeah WIME rules, have it installed still, tracked down an original copy of the map a few years back.

Nice. I had it for the Amiga 500 YEARS ago and still have the disks and box on my shelf. I would send some of my party south to rally the Ents and continue south to get the other southern/western Gondorians (Imrahil was down there iirc) then take others to the north to get the drawrves in on the action. All of my groups would converge somewhere near Minas Tirith and then go on a rampage through Mordor taking no prisoners. The assault of the Black Gate was always an EPIC battle. Good times....

This could be awesome if done right.

If they have a combat system that resembles the light saber combat of Jedi Outcast/Academy.

Edit : Also, are you guys talking about that ancient LOTR game back from '88?

I think my dad had it on a demo diskette back from the old Computer Shows he used to go to.

Yes indeed. One of the best gaming experiences of my life. I doubt this one will live up to that, but it is a totally different type of game so it is hard to compare.

Looks alright so far. Can't see much media about it tho. Will have to wait for previews and videos first.

Why can't most games come out on PC? I don't really want to buy a new console to play certain games. :(

From what I hear it's like a spiritual sucsessor to Star Wars: Battlefront. Which makes me feel all funny in my pants. I can't wait to go into battle as a Hobbit, hack into a fell beast alla the Engineer hacking into a spider droid.

This game looks pretty cool.

Edit:
I wouldn't mind a LotR: Total War.

Third Age: Total War
*for Medieval 2: Total War

IGN Video Interview.

Shows a shit ton of gameplay, Pandemic certainly seem to be enjoying the creation of the game.
Can't wait tbh, I had a lot of fun with Battlefront 1 + 2.

OH MY GOD. Play as a mother****ing troll killing elves in Rivendell? I cannot tell you much I'm in.

You guys do know about the Third Age, right?
It might not be much, but it's basically Lord of the Rings wannabes on a Final Fantasy engine.
