Just watched the 3rd movie and was wondering if anyone has read the books and can explain to me why in the hell Frodo and Billbo and Gandalf had to leave with the Elves at the end. Also, where are they going and why do they all have to leave Middle Earth? Please explain this to me anyone who has read the books, I think they explain it in them. Thanks

Middle earth is like europe, the elfs are sailing to "the new world" witch is a metaphore for america.

Is that from the book or are you just sayin that? And so why did they all have to leave? What do the Elves mean when they say "Our time here is ending"?

First, theyre the ringbearers; the rings had quite an effect on them and they must rest from it. Secondly, theyre frickin old and not needed in the old world anymore. Frodo chose to go cause he wants to stay with bilbo and experience the new world for himself.

Frodo is also now in the same situation as Bilbo: he's done so many things, been from home for so long, and gone so far in the last few years that he's never going to be content to just remain in the shire anymore.
Throughout the entire story its made clear that the last age was that of the elves, in which they safeguarded and took care of Middle Earth. Now the time is passing into the next age, that of Men. The Men are now going to be the keepers of Middle Earth, and the elves have made the decision to leave and joing the other elves in the undying lands in the west, which is made out to be very much like heaven.
