Lost Coast playtest

Player models will have 6,000 polygons/ YES!!!! cant wait to see that.

Thanks

Very nice. I'm not going to be able to run it probably, and I am not going to upgrade just so I can run some level, but I really appreciate the graphics there. They're beautiful. I just hope that people aren't expecting too much of the actual gameplay. Lost Coast is mostly a level built to show what the Source engine is capable of, and not to provide great gameplay. The article says it's 15 minutes - so basically it's all awing at the graphics and some shooting :).

It will be good benchmark for systems, lots of future games will have HDR and detailed textures...
and all valve games in future will have it.

15 min!!!! NOOO Lost Coast has a little over 4 hours of gameplay i heard.

I was going to look at the new pics, but I'd rather wait to see them in action!

I've never had a high end system and got one coming soon so I think it'll be worth me waiting :p

They said count the time in minutes, not hours.

Whoever said it has 4+ hours should be shot. That's aftermath.

Gosh I hate internet rumors.

Aftermath is, I hope, more than 4 hours. Blueshift was around 4 hours, I'd hope for more like 10 from Aftermath. If HL2 was 20 for me, Aftermath woud hopefully be 9-10.

Lost Coast is most definitely not 4 hours. It's a level built around the new technology and meant to show it well. I fully expect that on the second run, Lost Coast would be possible to complete in about 10 minutes.

That looks absolutely tremendous. I definately know I won't be running that puppy.

Verrrrry interesting...I know that there have presentations on how to retain AA while still using a floating point render target (HDR) and doing post process effects, but Valve managed to get it down to only a 10-30% performance drop?! I really freaking hope that Valve/ATi makes a presentation regarding their implementation at GDC '06 (they did it for their normal mapping technique, so why not?)

aftermath is likely to be only 4 hours with valve going down the episodic content route

Btw, who wants to put money on Valve adding streaming technology to Source as one of the features that bittech wasn't allowed to be told?

Me 1000£

it just looks so beautiful... i can easily see 15 minutes of gameplay stratching into a couple of hours of marvelling

My thoughts exactly ;)

Hah look at the pic where gabe sits at the computer.

WOW, that's a nice monitor.

By the fourth interation, the lads had cracked it: MSAA worked; it worked on all DX9 hardware, with reasonable performance on even a Radeon 9600
Well at least the article puts to death those previous statements that DX9 card owners wouldn't be able to see the effect.

Hm. HDR is nice and all, but those textures and vegetation sprites looked a little bland for what is supposed to be a 'no holds barred' tech demo.

Once Lost Coast and HDR is released, will the original HL2 game have HDR...?

Like if I loaded up Route Kanal after installing Lost Coast, would there be HDR on Route Kanal?

That might make HL2 interesting to play through again...

(BTW I didn't think those pictures looked realistic AT ALL.. When was the last time you walked outside and everything looked white...? How bright is the sun in the HL2 world...? That monastary looks like someones shining HID xenon headlights from a Mercedes through the windows.. not the sun... I understand the concept but lets hope it's just one of those instances where screenshots can't do it justice)

15 min is kinda disapointing, im definitely not excited too much about this now

Umm no...the download to have those high res textures in it alone would be in the gigabytes. Lost Coast is going to be a big download, and its only 2 maps, so the 30+ maps of hl2 would be insanely huge.

Hardly, it was never intended to be lengthy.

No, there is a lot of extra data that would have to be sent out over Steam, because all the maps would require new lightmaps and cubemaps. Not to mention the fact that the lighting itself was not designed with HDR in mind.

Even I step outside a lot and I too feel that artists are getting pretty overzealous with bloom, and a lot more balance in lighting is necessary. I also feel that the exposure adjustment is WAY too fast. For the graphics demo I'm making/planning (which includes HDR), I'm planning on making the exposure take something like 2 or 3 minutes to fully adjust (not the <5 secs in Lost Coast) and also have very very tight blurs (i.e. the blur radius is, say, 2 pixels wide and not 50, or in some implementations I've seen, over 100).

Right now, HDR is going to the lens flare of 2006, and it's going to be overused and abused in a lot of games, partly because a lot of devs will be putting a lot of work into it and want to show it off; partly because balancing exposure will require a lot more work on the part of the artist, increasing the number of manhours spent on a game. I expect that we will have to put up with it for a year or two at the most, but then it'll start getting dialed down more.

y does everyone complain about this i mean this year is like the start of hdr in games it wont be perfect at the start

Gee, you have a lot of NVIDIA stuff in your PC.
Yep.

What do you think of the Apple Cinema HD Display (http://www.apple.com/displays/specs.html)?
I've been using Apple Cinema Displays for several years now with both NVIDIA and ATI display adapters, starting with the original 22" Cinema Display. I was tempted for a while by the Samsung 24" display, but it wasn't a big enough step forward and had problems running at its native resolution with DVI inputs. The 30" version is great, and I would recommend it as a significant improvement over the 22" or 23" versions. It works fine for games or movies. I run 2560 by 1600 for my desktop and for games that support that resolution (e.g. Source games, WoW, ...). I made a half-hearted attempt to get two Apple Cinema HD Displays (http://www.apple.com/displays/specs.html) working simultaneously, but the connectors interfered with each other. Most of the machines at Valve have the Dell 24" LCD monitor (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/..._id=6198&cs=19&l=en&Page=productlisting.aspx), and a number of people have those set up in dual monitor configurations.

Do you get playable framerates at 2560 by 1600?
I get 150 to 170 FPS out of the Counter-Strike: Source VST depending upon what set of tweaks I'm running that day. That's with vsynch disabled, 16X aniso, and 6X AA.

For those who have not seen it.

Honestly, what would you need a 30" monitor for? you'd need to turn your head to see everything just about. Curse consumerism!

I use my 42" plasma as a monitor and it works beautifully but it's not right in front of me, it is mounted on the wall in front of me. :bounce:

I keep looking at all these pictures and isnt it weird that the HDR light is a little too bright? I mean I've walked around and seen places enough to know that there isnt light that just glows like HDR does. Im starting to get turned off because it just dosent look real

http://www.bit-tech.net/content_images/lost_coast_screens/12b.jpg

I mean maybe when I get in game with it and see acutal moving frames I may change my mind.

The still frames ruin the illusion.

I'm 110% sure you've had that happen to you (perhaps you were driving and the sun was reflecting off a car hood making it unberable to look at, or reflecting off a white building or something)

Once you see it in motion, it will be much better.
