my pc specs are:

1.8ghz intel pentium 4
512mbram
40gb hard drive
saphire radeon 9600xt 128mb agp 4x
audigy 1 oem(???) supports eax and surround blah blah.... w/ 5.1 speakers

i know that my pc isnt a high-end pc but still its pretty performant to handle HL2. Its wierd that all the knew games work perfectly, besides Domm3 and HL2.. In HL 2 i get a max fps of 30 (when i look at the ground), and when i talk to pp that have the specs as me, they said they get 60-70 fps.

i cant figure out whats the problem, i installed the new catalyst and all butr still its giving me shit. Can ne1 help me??????

maybe they get higher fpses because they play at lower graphics settings?

well i put my settings on medium, from Doom 3 to HL2, but HL2 is working slower for some reason.....

Put it all on the lowest, and even turn down Direct x..
But it at like 7, so put "mat_dxlevel 70" in the cousel.

hell no i want the cool effects of the dx 9 i just over with dx 7... and no im not going to OC

You can't have ace performance on a pc like that i'm afraid. It runs at pretty much 60fps on my system at 1280 by 1024 with 2xAA and 2xAF with VSync enabled, but it does drop down to 30 sometimes and my system is not a powerhouse. You should think about dropping the settings if you want teh performance or put up with low FPS if you want nice visuals.

i know i can lower my settings, but is funny that doom3 works pretty good with medium sets, 800x600 with bumpmaping and all on except for aa and af

For HL2 my settings are med models, med textures, simple reflections, trilinear filter, low shadows, high shaders, and on a 800x 600 w/o aa or af

Funny think is i switched from gf4 mx 440 to saphire radeon 9600xt 128mb. any the only difference i c is the reflections the rest is blah. with mx 440 i used to get green cl_showfps, with 30fps max, with 9600xt, i get red cl_showfps with a avg. 15-30 fps...when i get in a duct my fps can go up to 100fps...

the 9600 wasnt direct x 9 compatible when it was launched
it cant handle the amount of strain your putting on it

Also the Doom3 engine is not like the hl2 engine- it will sacrifice better graphics to maintain a good framerate, whereas the source engine will give you low fps before anything else.

No, if your computer can't handle the DX9 capabilities than the Source engine automatically reverts to DX8. HL2 is made for practically every computer.

HL2 is very much CPU bound. The 9600 can do very well in HL2 paired with a good CPU. Also a lot of people have had an awesome performance increase just by adding another 512MB (1gb total, no more).

Incorrect. The 9200's are not DX9 compatible though as they are old tech.

That's what i thought. Try omega drivers, and maybe a reformat? Definitely get a new cpu, if you want you can decrease sound quality for a performance increase.
