It does fine till it reaches about the 1000 server mark then it slows to a crawl. anyone know the reason?

So does anyone know what is up. It does it on battlefield 2 too. Seems to me it might be the processor, but it is hard to tell.

lol how would it be the processor its prob. slowing down because it has to load so much and the ping raises someone correct me if im wrong

It might help to know what processor you have. As a workaround, you *might* be able to decrease the priority of Steam.exe (Ctr+Shif+Escape), but chances are that won't work.

Currently, I've got an XP 2200+, and CPU usage sits tight at about 75% during server refresh. On another machine (2.8GHz Xeon), a server refresh would use 100% (and it appears that the server refresh thread uses high priority), and so I'd have to sit there and hold my mouse button down over the Stop Refresh button so my click would actually register and so I could get my computer back. That was this summer.

I think they've been working on fixing the server browser; two weeks ago, it'd only find about 20% of servers and pressing the Refresh All button would fail. Now, it finds all servers, and you can query as many times as you want.

Sounds to me like your server filters are limiting the results and its simply sorting them out. I seriously doubt its hardware related.

It does it with every game I have though. I tried it on battlefield 2 and the same issue occured. It seems that I can get a few servers and those will refresh alright, but any time I try to load new servers on it slows down. the funny thing is that It didn;t do this when I first built my system; at that time it would go fast as lightning.
