Ok. Today I sat down and decided to bite the bullet and that I was going to make a real model, not a mixmash of other people's models reskinned. I looked up maglites online and painted a maglite texture in photoshop using gradients and mspaint. I added the maglite logo from the maglite website, too. In fact, other than the logo, the texture is hand done. I used a clouds filter and lots and lots of pinch filters to make the bulb texture bit, and the mesh is a cylinder, vertex edited. It took me maybe an hour, including creating the texture. Crits, plz!

edit: oh and it's 200 faces.

I think I could get rid of some polys on the head:

I made it rounder, and cleaned up the head bit. 288 faces:

Here's new compared to old:

The texture looks stretched... that button should be round... and it's much perdier in green metallic :P (mine)

Also some C&C (from looking at my mag)...

The front part (the buld thing) is shorter then on your model.

The hand grip isn't that long its about 1/3 shorter too

Theres a small grip thing on the back area just before the rounded edge, also there should be a small line before it (the hatch for the battery).

The glass is a bit more outwards then it is in your model.

make it have more sides, as well as give it some specular maps fo soem sort, as well as perhaps a bump map..

looks like a great staring model.

The button is round, but the bit around the button is oval:

Bulb bit shortened a fraction, handgrip shortened, and grip added on the back. The maglite website pics weren't all that great, and I don't own one myself so these little details get missed. Plus a meshsmooth group on the whole thing. (no extra faces)

And bump and specular maps for SidewinderX143:

Do you really think it needs more sides?

Looking good! I've got an old maglite (4 years) and the logo doesnt look like that on mine... so i wont comment on it... but you need to shorten the front end more by about twice as much as the front grip is wide, then its perfect. Also nice job on the back grip :) looks very good, exactly like mine :P

i would model the botton also, will be only about 30 triangles more, still more than low enough for HL2 and it will look alot nicer

Try to make the mesh look a little more like the pic attached. 164 triangles with button, unmesh-smoothed. With mesh-smooth it is 71 polies. I love the texture! Excellent!

I don't want to make an 800 polygon cup in HL2, why put so much detail into a flashlight that looks almost as good as one with 150 more polygons? Don't nickel and dime your way up to extremely high polygon counts. Spend em where it counts.

my only c&c is really that the base, (handle bit) is too short :)

I own 2 mag lites, and have knocked someones teeth in with one, by accident ;(
it cost them alot to get the fixed :(
