So I downloaded the Half Life 2 demo from Steam, but when I started the game up it had like white lines showing up everywhere. All the textures were loading and everything but random white lines were showing up does anyone know what the problem could be, because I was plan on buying the game but I don't want to get it if this will happen in the real game. My graphics card is a nvidia geforce 8600m gs if that is of any help too.

Make sure you have the lastest graphic card driver.

You can usually download it on the provider's official website.

I dont see the driver being a problem as I just got a new computer with the graphics card like a couple of weeks ago so shouldnt it already have the newest driver available?

Actually new PC's often ship with ancient drivers. It's always a wise thing to do to update all your drivers after buying or building a new system.

Also, a lot of people have reported problems with iffy Nvidia drivers for Windows Vista, so if you're using that then there's even more of a reason to make sure they're up to date.

I downloaded the newest driver and it still has the same problem I really want to buy this game but I dont want it to look like it does in the demo. I really can not see why it is doing this my laptop I got which has the graphics card in it is only a couple weeks old so it cannot be any problem form overclocking or anything someone please help.

I found this link:
http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t10461.html
It is due to the way certain games (not just Half-Life 2) work with packed textures and the way that certain antialiasing schemes are.

...

If you are using supersampling, try multisampling or vice versa.

The general impression I get is that it's to do with Anti Aliasing, so fiddle with your AA settings. There's an old post from Gabe Newell on these very boards about it.

I tried messing with the AA but the lines still showed up I am begining to think that the demo is just messed up or something.

There is a picture I took to show you what it looked like.

That looks similar to this problem that another person had here, but that was with a 6600GT.

I see no reason why an 8600GS would not run HL2 flawlessly. I would be forced to conclude that there is indeed something wrong with the demo, which after all is quite old. HL2, on the other hand, has received countless updates since it was released. If I were you I'd just go ahead and buy it - it's a great game and you won't regret it. Even if the problem persists, there's probably a workaround - just post here again and someone will probably have the answer.

BTW in future please use the 'edit' button on your posts instead of making lots in quick sucession.

Ok I think I will go ahead and purchase the game, thanks for all the help guys.
