I'm not doing a mod, but I'm hoping to maybe spark an interist for someone who would want to make a rpg. Looking at the HL2 engine, I think it would be great.
Say an action rpg similar to Zelda 64. Except with heavy dialogue.
For dialogue, you wouldn't even have to have voice acting, wouldn't it be possible to just have text and have the mouths move to the sylables?

So yeah, all you rpg fans, jap console or CRPG fans, I hope you guys start a mod.

heh, maybe a really dumb post (with not much a point and absolutely no content or ideas :upstare: ), but still, I'm hungry for a good immersing rpg.

Mate, your asking people who's soul ability appears to be clones of CS or WWII sims or futuristic cyberwarrior neomod's to create a deep and meaningful RPG. I can't quite see anything amazing in RPG terms coming out on the source engine for a good few years atleast. Though it would be great if I'm wrong, I wouldn't mind a good RPG to play on it either.

ya think...just maybe?

edit: sorry, I don't mean to be an ass, it would be nice though if you contributed some ideas perhaps.

heh, I know. A man can dream though.

I'm sorry hiln, I don't mean to be an ass. It's cool to see you don't want your typical CS clone, and you'd rather have a nice, juicy RPG to sink your teeth into. Just, if you want one, perhaps you should give a little bit more detail. Let's hear some ideas, you know, start the ball rolling or something :)

heh, its fine. The problem is, I don't have any ideas or details, hence the last comments about my having no ideas, but just wanting to spark some SMALL ammount of interest into mod makers.

I have a rpg mod... well its more of an Singleplayer, 3:rd person, cel-shaded adventure mod, but the same things applies :)

The mod isnt really public yet, but will be soon. Keep an eye out for a mod named "Malin".

That would be possible, ive talked with valve about it.

heh, yeah, I knew about your mod.
I posted in your forum one or two times before the site or forum went down.
I hope you stick with it to the end. :)

Heh cool :)

People will kill me if I dont release it... so i better be releasing it :)

www.nucleardreams.com

I can ensure you it follows the FPS RPG line. I'm part of the team and you can bet that we're going to have more backgroung history and caratcher stories than ever seen on a mod... combined with the juicy Source engine and some RPG gameplay.

Some? Lmao how about tons!!!

First rule in proping your/my mod, use big words!

But seriously, yeah we are really trying to put life into the story and world of ND, as well give the player a great rpg and alot of customizations and options.

Make some RPGs? Did you know that Half-Life 2 is a first person shooter?

It's the perfect engine. It doesn't have to be turn-based or isometric. It doesn't even have to have stats really either. Just use the HL2 engine to be fully immersed.
A good example of the kind of rpg that would be good for HL2 is the Gothic series. Great open ended play.

The point of my post is that you shouldn't complain about a lack of RPG mods because HL2 is a FPS and that will be the majority of the mods... first person shooters...

I wasn't complaining, I'm just trying to spark an interest in a couple people.
And of cource the majority of them are going to be first person shooters, we all know that.

My point is, It would be perfect for some immersive rpgs, I hope some (at least a couple!! ;( ) people go out and make some good immersive mods rather than just another mediocre multi-player mod that that usually spawn.

And I'm not trying to offend anyone.

My responce on reading the thread title was 'No, you make some rpgs damn you'

But then... :)

Anyway, how do you define immersive rpg and do you like men in black with nightvision and sub-machinguns ?

::sigh::
oh well, I'll just wait and see if some are made
sorry to bother

edit: The whole point wasn't for me to give any ideas, or to give my opinion of what I want in an rpg, or what immersive means, it was to hopefully make some random mod maker go "hmmm... I should make a good story driven mod, half-life 2 can make a immersive gaming world, I'm going to use that to my advantage"
Yes, it may be a retarded thread, and its fine if you want to delete it or whatever, but thats all I wanted.

Well ND is really shooting for those rpg qualities, so if you want bookmark the site and keep watching, you wont be disapointed.

Gothic 1&2 where great.

One problem though Half-Life in general is a "indoor" engine. You'd need to be able to produce sprawling enviroments (trees/rivers) that look Real.

On another note an RPG would need to be SinglePlayer. I doubt you could create a system to allow characters to grow, and be able to then Save that character and move it to another server for example.

Now if someone was thinking of making one (I know I would like to) you'd need a regular meeting place (Basic site with forums) so members could disscuss Ideas and get a rough layout of what will happen and how it will happen. All in all it'd be alot of hard work unlike your standard CS clone (What I don't get is why poeple make Mods just like CS. Why not create one where you don't kill eachother and plant bombs to just restart next round).

Why don't you make one hiln?
Everyone and their step-sister's brother's dogs' best friend seem to be making one.

Why not join in on the fun ;)

meh
I was already on a few mods (hl1 mods, a long time ago) that utterly went down the crapper, so I'm not as enthused to work on a mod anymore.
heh, I can't even remember the names of them

heh, I model, but I suck, and I quit years ago.

I used to make levels, but I used to do so much stuff on one map, the Hammer Editor used to crash, couldn't help it neither.

I will be doing a mod when the tools to do it come out, til then I'll try and find a book called
Making Websites for Dummies

Well, the HL2 engine supports large outdoor levels as well. And with enough time, I'm sure you could add stats, though if it was my mod I wouldn't bother. Entropy wants to do something like a MMORPG, but I'm betting they are just overly ambitious and it will end up failing or taking too long.

I'll I'm talking about are some good single-player mods. The term role playing has changed alot over the years. You've got your typical japanese console rpg like the final fantasies. Then you have the isometric computer rpgs like fallout, baldur's gate, and planescape: torment. Then games like System Shock and Deus Ex that mix rpg story and stat elements with a first person shooter.
I'm thinking of either a third person or first person mod, (fantasy with swords and such, or present/future with guns ect.) that just uses the source engine to really put you into the world, and make you feel for the characters, and utilize the gaming world and physics to your gameplay/story.
I'm just hoping that more than a handful of people will take advantage of valve's work on this engine and the tools that will come with it.

hence the whole point of the topic, to spark an interest in a couple (yes, I've said this alot, but I can't stress this enough) to make something creative and original rather than more mediocre.
Thinking about it makes me want to download the XSI(sp?) program and get better at modelling and and hopefully, enventually help out. (heh, I prolly will get it now)

I agree with hiln, but I'm not quite as desperate. It'd be nice to see some good single-player RPG games, and I think a couple of teams are working on them. Valve has certainly made it more feasible, by giving us character expressions, physics, etc.

No way, I am working on an idea that has a few RPG elements. That is I am working out character concepts and attempting to break down this fighting concept.

All I can say about it right now is, Anyone ever watch Kung fu theatre

hmm
I just read an interview about malin... damn that seems interesting. I'd love to see the element powers in source.

I just want to point out that its an old interview.. I will get my ass into new interviews when the new site is done :)

As small news update (so you guy know what im doing): We're still redesigning Malin. The concept artist had some intaweb problems but it will be fixed soon. If the design is good, we will do the site gfx and put the site up! \o/
