Making a map of my house

My parents are trying to get decorating ideas for the furntiture for their new house. The problem is that its in a different state from them so they can't easily look at it to pick out the furniture. Since the graphics in HL2 are amazing and I saw there is a realistic texture pack, I was wondering if anyone could build the interior of the house, or even just a few rooms using the floorplan and pics. It seems silly to go out and buy home design software when I already have the hl2 engine, but using the modding software looks a little bit too dificult for me. Would anyone be willing to do this?

I'm trying to make the rooms, but as I posted my game won't compile. Also, what is the scale of the # in the hammer editer? When you make a room 128x128, what is the 128?

There is no conversion. You have to build maps based on what looks good, not what's technically accurate.

Besides that the textures will not line up properly by default if you don't build the map keeping the power of 2 in mind.

I doubt HL2 comes with half the furniture that your parents are going to use, so you'd have to use 3dsmax or XSI to make them.

Right now I basically just want to put any furniture there so they can see the layout and what kinds of things they'd want. I'm having trouble finding tutorials to help me design the basic layout. I know how to make rooms, resize and texture them, but how do you put in doors? I know how to give the door brush the correct properties, but not how to take a room and put a door to enter the room. I've tried without success to use the cutting tool. What's the best way to take out walls when you are trying to combine rooms?

The clip tool my friend. A quick google will help you.

I think. Making the house in max is a good idea. I know you cant test it when you can moves around into the house. And texture are easy to add and the funiture would be easily to make if you get the hang of it.

I figured it out. My maps all had spaces and it looks like it won't load them, but it will load maps without spaces. I changed the spaces to underscores and it works. Thanks for the help.

well looks like you figured it out so get cracking.

I can use it to remove the entire wall, but how do you remove just the part where you want to put the door?

shift + x (I think) or clicking on the button will cycle through different clipping "modes"
-save left
-save right
-save both sides

Also if the clip tool is removing the whole brush, you're not using it right. Remember that you have to draw a line for it to clip at.

just a tought- making your is much harder that it seems. its very hard to get the mesures right, but if you dont it looks weird
