Hey everyone,

I'd thought that I'd post here before going to ask for local tech support. I've searched for similar problems and error messages, and I have gotten some general tips which havent worked so far :(

Basically the error occurs with only two programs that I know of so far, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Bioshock. Upon launching either one of them, the splash image comes up fine, but then the screen turns black, then into a blue screen with the following error:

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005 0x00000000 0xA72FCB44 0x00000000) for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005 0x00000000 0xA71BAB44 0x00000000) for Bioshock

Also, a very high pitched sound comes from my speakers, and appears to loop.

Here are the specs for my computer:

Intel P4 3.40 GHz
2.00 GB RAM
nVIDIA 7800 GTX
Maxtor 7L25050
Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
Windows XP with Service Pack 2

I have tried reinstalling both games, and checked the drivers for my video card, sound card and hard drive. All seem to be fine but the problems persist.

I know people get these errors all the time, but any help in the slightest would be awesome :)

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm going to bed now so I'll check back in 9 hours or so.

its a possible driver problem or other software confliction.install anything else recently?

Good to know that its narrowed down a bit :)

Although it says that my sound driver is up-to-date, that could be the problem as I had to get it fixed a few months ago (back when the problem started, its been going on for a while, and I have been trying to find solutions when I have the time).

As for things that have been installed, there have been a lot between when the problem started and now.

Do you think that a system restore back to, say November would help? It would remove a lot of programs sure, but if that doesnt solve anything I could always undo the process couldnt I?

Thanks for your help.

if thats when it started then i would. it should show you some of what you did if you know around the time it started happening. if it shows, then you can just uninstall it.

Unfortunately, the system restore will not work for some reason. It gets to approximately 33% then restarts and says that it could not be restored. I'll look into this...

i did a little bit, but its so that error could be so many things.

Yeah... it could be many things.

Perhaps I'll trying restoring a few more times, then tech support.

Thanks for the help.

EDIT: I just realized that System Restore WAS working two days ago, so its weird that it would stop working now.
