anyway i can convert all my third party mods (ns, ts, poke646 etc)? i ended the task before they were all converted, so how can i out em in steam

I wish I knew, right now it's allegedly converting, but I don't think it's doing shit. It's been like this for 30 minutes

If you find out let us know : )

mine converted hl, dod, and cs

the valve mods is not the problem, cuz if u dont have them u can dl them if worst comes to worst (sux 2 b u, 56kers)

wat i wanna do is play TS and NS

How long did it take to convert your original HL? because it hasn't changed since the previous post. I thinking of shutting it down and start over again (again)...

Beware, if you stop converting now, it will never let you convert again unless you create another new account.

Oh jeez, I already created 3 new accounts... running out of ideas for email ids lol. How long is this supposed to take? it's been more than an hour now and still nothing.

fcuk it then. dl all the shit thru steam. end the task, use ur main email address

Has ANYONE been able to get steam to complete the conversion process? It hung on that step for 13 HOURS while I was at work. I couldn't believe it.

Yes, I have completed the conversion process before.

I uninstalled Steam and re-installed, but now it won't ask me to convert my Half-Life games unless I make another account.

again: who gives a shit about converting valve mods

im tlaking about natural selection and the specialists!

i do not like how each game is one file.... that means i cant drag and drop all my mods.... steam has to convert it into one huge ass file...

XtAkm4p, do you have a folder something like Steam/SteamApps/E-mailAccount? (With your e-mail account of course). Try installing the third-party mods in there. That is what I THINK I read from Steam's FAQ on adding mods after the conversion process. Not sure it works though ...

nope. those are old school steam program file format.

now every game is one, big ass file in the steamapp folder

Oh, alright. Did Valve say anything about releasing conversion tools?

After making like 20 accounts to get mods to install I finally figured out exactly where they go.

Steam/SteamApps/Your Email/half-life/Mod Directory

Just stick it in there and it WILL work!

it takes forever to convert, but dont lose hope. it really is doing something unless it says 'not responding' in task manager. at least from my experience with it so far

So, if I want to download the videos from Steam I have to convert all my old Half-Life files into the Steam directory?

Wrong, when I had it converting all the mods it said not responding but about every 5 minutes it would update and get done with like 2 more mods

OK, I'm trying this now...

Hey kenman, what if I installed Steam, made an account, and converted all my files. But, I then un-installed and re-installed Steam, and I want to use the same account. On the second install, it never asks me if I want to convert files.

Does Steam do anything special that I can't do manually when it says "convert"? Like, can I just create a folder in SteamApps that is my e-mail address, then just transfer my whole entire Half-Life folder into it?

I'm not trying to do another account. I dont know how it could have messed this up: all it had to do was move files from one directory to another, or compress them into a file or something. It shouldn't have taken 13+ hours, and if it really was taking longer than tha, well I had enough of it....

Apos, the conversion thing probably works based off your original HL1 registry settings. If it changed your registry before it crashed, it won't run again unless you restore those reg keys or reinstall HL1. That's my guess.

Well, I converted once with one e-mail account. After that, I decided to delete Steam and all my Half-Life files.

When I re-installed everything, and logged into the same e-mail account on Steam, it did not ask me if I wanted to convert.

Even if I make a new account, it just asks where I want to store my Half-Life games, but does not try to convert anything.

Well I tried your thing ken, it's a major improvement but it needs to patch it to 1.6 and I can't get it do it.

Kenman, I also tried your suggestion, and it did do something! Currently in my games list, it shows all the Valve mod icons as grey, and under my "Third Party" list are all my mods: Half-Life, CS, DoD, Ricochet, TS, NS etc.

When I double clicked on any of those "Third Party" mods, it asked if I wanted to download the 420 MB Half-Life file, which is already listed in the "Third Party" menu.

Now, this is using my true e-mail account which has actually completed the conversion process. I have experimented with your suggestion through creating a new account with a fake e-mail (this one didn't even ask me if I wanted to convert my files to Steam).

When I transfered my Half-Life directory over to the Steam/E-Mail directory, it listed all the mods in the "Third Party" section in Steam's game menu (like with my first, true e-mail account). BUT, when I double clicked on any "Third Party" mod, it asked for my Half-Life CD key (which I have never entered into Steam), and if I wanted to add that mod to my game list. Well, I didn't want to use my CD key with my "fake" account.

Anyone have any idea what I should do to make Steam work with my true e-mail account?

You can't stick the "official" mods into the folder. Thats for mods like The Specialists or Natural Selection. To get the "official" mods working just "download" them. (It converts them when you try to download mods you have, and yes it does look like it froze. (once the file in SteamApps appears it is done, so you can just end task steam if it freezes)) After you get all of them working just put them on auto update and leave them overnight. (I'm gonna do that tonight)

Also, you cant play any third party mods without downloading/converting half-life. So thats why it asked you to download it.

i was able to convert a 2nd time... not that the 2nd time worked mind you. i uninstalled both hl and steam and made sure to delete both directories. reinstalled both and it asked me to convert.... though it sat there for at least an hour and looked like it hadn't done anything at all :\

Thanks a lot kenman, I guess I'll have to go do that.

And Aerovoid, did you just un-install Steam, Half-Life, and all your mods. Then after you re-installed everything, did Steam ask you to convert again, using the same e-mail account that you had already converted with before?

well i hadn't played hl in like 2 years so i didn't have any mods. but yeah i uninstalled and re-installed, used the same email and password and everything and it asked me to convert again... maybe i was lucky... i'm thinking about trying it a 3rd time. i'll do it some other day. since it's all rather buggy at the moment anyway.

Mine went through the conversion process without a problem... but none of the 3rd party games showed up.
I had to add them in the way kenman described.
