I was just wondering how many people did martial arts on these forums, so I decided to make this thread.

If you do a martial art or have any questions about martial arts or whatever. Post here.

I personally do: (did reallym I just moved house and need to find some clubs)

Muay Thai - This is the traditional form of kick boxing from Thailand
I trained with a guy named Master Lec. He was once world champion in muay thai and went to all sorts of martial arts seminars and cross style development meetings. Basically he knows his stuff :)
I decided to start thai boxing for several reasons. No1 was that I really wanted to start a martial art and my brother recomended it. (He went too)
No2 was because I was in a fairly low time in my life and really really wanted to take out some anger and frustration on something.

Anyway. Martial art number 2

Tai Kwon Do - Alot like karate in a way, but has much more emphasis on kicking. Very styleish. But in my opinion useless in a fight compared in Muay Thai. I started this because my friends decided to join up. So I decided what the hey. The more the merrier. :p

Number3
Judo - I know, I know, its a sport. But it taught me alot about footwork and of couse grappling. I actually havent done this in a while. Years now, but I have retained most of what I learnt. :)

Number4, shouldnt really count this, but I went to about 15 lessons of ju jit su. This is a great martial art against single apponents. But as many will tell you, I can't see it practically working against multiple oponents. Looks cool mind! :p

Last of all, my brother has taught me ALOT.
He trained at a place called KickFit. They do an awefull lot there and take it very very seriously. They do all kinds of stuff such as Jeet Kun Do (Bruce Lees very own martial art), wing chun (Most of Jeet Kun Do is based upon this), kickboxing, escrima (Stickfighting) and all sorts of other stuff.
The instuctor "Richard Hudson", got several british and world championship titles in escrima and has over 8 blackbelts. He was taught by somone who was taught by Bruce Lee. Very respectable.
So my bro yeah, he taught me alot. And hurt me alot :p

Right Now its your turn!!!

I did Judo for a couple of years when I was about 10-11. Almost all the kids in my school did that to practice balance, improve stamina and it was generally fun.

Then I saw a lot of Bruce Lee films and really bad Kung Fu B-movies in which people jumped 20 foot and chopped a tree in half or punched their arm in the ground up to the elbow and thought "that's cool, I want that, too" Of course it had nothing to do with the bully in my neighbourhood who kicked my butt on a regular basis.

Anyway, I started Karate. It was a mixture of Jiu Jitsu and Karate called wado-ryu Karate. I did that about 3-4 years and really enjoyed it. Especially the Budo-days: all sorts of martial arts to practice in our sportscentre with well known tutors.

After this, I haven't done any martial arts anymore. I still get itchy when I see Jet-Li or Steven Seagal (sorry, I know...).

Maybe I'll do a practice lesson in Aikido, I really like the concept of using the attackers force against himself.

i workout everyday and train on the heavy bag and shadow box, dont really have a sparring partner, but i particularily like the style of jeet kune do and im an avid bruce lee, as in i respect the guy a lot. i like that it should be no style, not a set of regulations, but a way to express your body and to do the necessary move at the right time.

anyways i mostly box, just wish i had a sparring partner without having to pay to go somewhere. im fairly light i think, around 130-135 being 22 years old, and its nice to have a physique similar to bruces' :afro:

I practise in the middle of the loungeroom floor whenever I'm on a sugar high...

lol I know that feeling

Is it possible to do any of those special moves from Bulletproof monk or Matrix? ;)

Never seen Bulletproof monk...

Matrix moves you can do if you have a steady supply of lysergic acid.;)

lol yeah, well interesting stuff :)

And yeah, it is posible to wall run believe it or not.

One of my mates went to a kung fu lesson and people were running up walls and doing bkflips off them apparently!!! :O :O

I can do a hand spring and the Chienese get up flip thing you see in alot of films but thats about it :)

I dont have the balls to try a backflip :p

If you like boxing then I sugest muay thai, as it translates to Thai Boxing btw. Its basically much beter form of boxing with kicks and grappeling + other stuff. + its full contact sparing alot of the time :)

Oh and it is very very very good exercise!!!
Like insane amounts of exercise!! :p
When I was doing it regulaly I could manage about 130 pressups. Which was nice. I am out of it now and can only manage 100. But I am perfectly happy with that! :)

I suggest everyone try doing 20 - 30 pressups a night btw. It is very very rewarding to know your getting expodentially stronger. :D

I ve got black belt in Winshu (Winshu is kind of KunFo), There are five styles in the UK while 7-12 styles in China.

Such as Monky Style
Rabit Style
Tiger Style..........etc

Wnshu is Mix between Monky+Rabit:cool:

2 years of "soft-style" aikido (there are americanized hard styles that incorporate strikes, steven segal does this). was very interesting on many levels. similar to judo in that there are no strikes, and it emphasizes using your opponents momentum and whatnot against them. lots of applications to real world fighting, joint locks, throws, grappling grappling grappling! one thing that was really cool was that we got to spar with swords and tanto and knives and kendo sticks and bo once we were good enough to handle those weapons.

the instructor was a complete hardcore psycho whack-job, but a very effective sensei. he got his black belt in japan when he was like 14 or some crazy shit.. he held exhibitions every so often where he'd spar against some of his tae kwon do/karate/judo/whatever friends just to show us the utility of aikido. he had to do this in a way b/c the training, especially at first, was like 30 minutes of how to breathe, 30 minutes of how to fall, 30 minutes of how to stretch, 30 minutes of how to walk, etc..

striking martial artists were never much of a match for the dude (which makes sense b/c the whole art was designed as a defense against striking arts, and he was pretty ****ing good). whenever wrestlers or judo-ists came though, it was more interesting.

i've been wanting to get back into it, but i haven't had the time.. :(
oh, i did a little "street fighiting" too, it had a name i think, it was basically vale tudo-ish ju jitsu. the guy who taught it was kinda a tool, i only messed around with that on and off for a few months, it was good for practicing aikido locks in 'real-life'.

Oh yes they teach it in China not in the UK. I ve been told that you need at least three flipping years to get the black belt.

i've been goin to kung fu for 4 times a week for about 3 years now. Pretty good martial art but i'm getting tired of it.

Im also in JKD, have you read the book "The Art of Expressing the human Body"? Its a great book, has all of Bruce's workouts.

I used to do Tang soo do, or however you spell the god damn thing, It was crap so I quit :)

Tai Kwon Do up until i was 18

Got my red belt and then came to uni so havn't kept it up. Apart from the occasional showing off :) I agree, not that much use in a fight as a style... but the fact your'e probably hard as nails if you keep the training up, and have extremely fast reactions would probably help :) Hmmm... maybe i should start training again...

(I can do the running up wall backflip thing, but it has nothing to do with martial arts. I did it when pissed once and realised i could do it. It's one of them things that u think is scarey and hard until u get the balls to do it. Then to do it again and again and again is pretty darn easy)

Im a big fan of combat sports but i have poor eyesight so im just a spectator.
My 2 fav sports are K1 and boxing, K1 is a mix of martial arts and is 1 of the bigest spectator sports in japan, U can catch it on eurosport in the uk.
As for boxing Ricky Hatton is da man (Light welter weight).

i've got a black belt 1st dan in Tae-Kwon-Do. i quit after i found out that after black belt, it was just all about showy moves and nothing really practical. we used to do some full contact sparring once all the juniors had gone home, but no-one was really willing to let go and go the full way. shame really. did a bit of breaking bricks (broke two house bricks with my fist for my grading), lots of fitness training and practising moves.

i thought i may as well join a gym and do all the fitness stuff there, instead of dressing up in my uniform and doing my belt everytime. tae-kwon-do may be showy but i don't know anyone who can take down a tae-kwon-do black belt. we used to have regular sparring tournaments with karate/kung-fu/kick boxing clubs, and we'd whip them everytime. tae-kwon-do is more technical i think, there's a move for hitting every part of the body from any position and any situation. if you're bothered to learn it all then you'll be a powerful fighter.

See, thats part of the reason why I don't think tai kwon do is quite as effective as other martial arts. Your probably very very good and a excelent fighter, but most people that I spared with in tai kwon do wernt black belts. And were abismal. They just couldnt hit shit!

I think tai kwon do is excelent if you study it for a long time. But its practilly useless until you get to a certain point.

Or thats how i see it anyway.
I see the same thing in karate and most other generally westernised martial arts such as kick boxing. Of cause there are also exceptions...

I liked muay thai because right after the first/second lesson you are much more able to defend yourself streight off.

Also, jeet kun do pwns them all!!! :p

I took Tae Kwon Do for about two years or so, but then my teacher got arrested, so no more Tae Kwon Do.

holy crap you're walking wounded!

about the worst injury i had at tae-kwon-do was when we were practising throws. i got thrown by a girl  and i managed to rip the tendon in my left shoulder. couldn't have a wank for months.

I don't... but my friend knows "Tiger Claw." I had never heard of it before.. but he does some crazy shit with that... He learns to rip peoples cheeks off and stuff...

The kid was intimidating to begin with... 160 lbs. with about 2% body fat...completely ripped...damn good wrestler...now he can rip peoples' cheeks off and completely whoop their ass..

sounds like he'd make a horrific aunty. you know, the type who always go for the cheeks. geddit? i'll get me coat...

If you want my opinion Jujitsu it probably the best martial art there is against signel opponents. A m8 of mine once does Jujitsu and once had several lessons from Royce Gracie.... if you dont know who he is you dont belong in this thread! :E

heheh did you hear about the last one in the series is being canceled?:( it was going to have all the records of what exercises bruce did everyday. Its kinda old news but..yea...also you wouldnt happen to have a subscription to sifu lamars hardcore jkd magazine would you? I wrote a article for the magazine like 2 months ago, he said he was going to publish it for me, but for some reason lamar hasnt released the 6th issue (or atleast not to me) and theres nothing on the site about it.
Then i cant get ahold of him either, PLUS the site he was hosting http://webkwoon.com/ has shutdown. :(
Well anyways if you do have the 6th issue look at "Attribute Training" by Wesley Edwards thats me!

Lol... that's awesome.

I love how you threw the "i'll get me coat..." at the end.

I did Tai Kwon Do for seven years and quit when I thought it was getting old and boring :dozey:. Sometimes, I wish I hadn't.
