My friend came to me with a problem with his computer in that it was 10 years old and had an old os on it. He asked me to install xp on it, so I did it and everything was fine. Then he came to me and asked me to wipe his hard drive and do a clean install. This is where the problems began to arise. For one, the cable internet connection only connects at 4-6kb/s (based on download speed), the graphics are slow as molasis in winter, and that's about it. I'm thinking that it's the graphics drivers as well as the ethernet drivers, or lack there of, that are causing the problems. I was also wondering also how to get an exact list of his hardware so that I could download all the drivers for them. Any help would be appreciated.

Windows 98 would be better.

If you slam XP on performance it should be ok? So all the style is 98 style etc.

The thing is that when I installed xp the first time, performance was acceptable, which was when all the old drivers were still on the system. When I installed it the second time, I completly wiped the drives and erased all the drivers for everything. I'm thinking that if I could just find the drivers, I would be able to have the thing running fully operational. But the problem is that I don't really know how to identify the hardware installed on the system.
The main things i need are the video drivers and the ethernet drivers. if I got those, it would probably fix the slow video and the slow internet.

Run belarc advisor (google it) on his machine, should give you his exact hardware specs. If you get all the drivers up to date, performance should improve somewhat, but don't expect miracles
