Shooting has just started of the film adaptation of Max Payne, and a first look at the movie's main character is now available. As usual we are not too excited about the film, as every recent game to film translation has left us sick to our very stomachs, but with some people of quality partaking in the project it has a chance of impressing.

Mark Wahlberg will take the roll of Max Payne, and although he does not look much like the character I am sure we could have been stuck with much worse. Better news comes from the fact that John Moore will be directing. He did not do that bad with his effort in Behind Enemy Lines - although Flight of the Phoenix was less impressive. There is a bit more bad news though, as recent reports hint that the film is trying to achieve PG-13 rating, and we just can't see Max's character been portrayed correctly under the confines of that rating.

It is currently unknown if the movie with keep the heavy film noir and slow-motion scenes of the game intact, or if it will instead adopt it's own approach. However, it is not scheduled to be released until sometime in 2009 so we still have loads of time to find out, and then complain if necessary.

A PG-13 Max Payne? Is it even worth the effort?

Eh, as much as I like him I can't see Mark doing Max justice. Clive Owen would've been a no-brainer, he has the deadpan ex-cop (edit - wait, just cop... you know what I mean) thing downpat, and he's used to spewing large amounts of rhetoric (Sin City).

Why would it being PG-13 be a problem? Max Payne was never big on violence - well, gore atleast. As long as they get the tone right... which I somehow doubt no matter the rating.

Clive Owen would've been a far better choice, not only is he a better fit but he's also a far better actor than Marky Mark.

PG-13 movies typically suck, movies that are censored to ensure it reaches PG-13 suck hardcore (exhibit A. Die Hard 4). On top of this, the director has yet to make a single good film. Oh and let's not even go into the horrible track record that is game-to-movie adaptations.

All this evidence points to only one thing, Max Payne the movie will most likely suck. I'll stick with the games, thanks.

Also means no drugs, sex or large violence like in the games.
Big disappointment.

But I will seriously lol if that granny with the shotgun is in there. I would also lol if Max Payne bashed her by opening a door into her.

Whaaaat? Max Payne wouldn't work as a film. It's far too cheesy.

Wasn't the point of max payne to bring cinematic-type elements into games? If you bring that back into a movie, it's just gonna be one big cliche.

Maybe some comic-book-page scenes would be alright.

Its been a while since I've played the games, but cheesy? I remember a well written dark, neo-noir game.

This and Deus-Ex is one of the few games that will make a good movie in the hands of a visual director. Altough John Moore hasn't done anything thats appealed to me and is probably the wrong choice for director. Although I don't mind Marky Mark as Payne.

PG-13? They should aim for the rating corresponding to the one the game had. Which was probably either 16+ or 18+.

Looks like this might end up as another Hitman.

PG-13??

NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This will be just like hitman ;(

this movie should've been done years ago, or to be done at the same time when Max Payne 3 becomes relevant

You don't remember the extremely cheesy "dark" writing? Sure, it had some upsetting imagery, but it was mostly camp noir.

It was definitely campy as hell.

Clive Owen would have been an infinitely better choice, Wahlberg looks nothing like Payne and PG-13? My expectations for this movie just plummeted to zero.

The guy from the 2nd Max Payne looked stupid anyway, so I'm fine with Wahlberg doing it.

What ever happened to that short Max Payne film?

Can't remember the name...

PG13? No dice!

Exactly! Im not saying kids dont play Max Payne, but to target the movie adaption for them is like making NC-17 Cinderella...
Which i think exist... But you get my point. Right?

Exactly.

As an aside, my flatmate once complained about John Woo's Stranglehold that it was copying Max Payne's style.
I facepalmed. You can say that about any other game like in that, sure. But one made by Woo? Does not compute. Max Payne copied HIS style - into another genre. /rant

More bad news.

Mila Kunis has been tapped to star alongside Mark Wahlberg in the upcoming Max Payne movie.

Kunis will play an assassin who teams up with Payne, a New York cop broken by the murder of his family, in order to avenge the murder of her sister. The movie will be directed by John Moore, whose previous credits include The Omen, Flight of the Phoenix and Behind Enemy Lines, and features a screenplay by Beau Thorne. Aside from Kunis and Wahlberg, who was first revealed as the titular character in November, no announcements regarding the movie's casting have been made.

Kunis is best known for playing empty-headed rich girl Jackie Burkhart on That '70s Show, as well as for providing the voice of Meg Griffin on the long-running animated series Family Guy. Mona Sax is best known for shadowy motivations which led her to work both with and against Max at various times, as well as her sultry voice and deft touch with high-power rifles.

More information about the Max Payne movie can be found at the Internet Movie Database.

If there is a tripping scene in the film, will he make paranoid comments about him being onset and onstage, with lights and cameras focusing on his every action (reference to the paranoid comments about Max'e being in a computer game :D)

I much rather it be a R, but Die Hard 4 was great.

I freakin love Mark Wahlberg.

That is all.

Withholding judgement.

Not gonna be psyched for it or anything but I may well end up watching it. It's not like I'd be paying.

Same here, although I did get a Sin City like vibe from that trailer, which is a good thing. We'll just have to wait and see. I really hope this wont suck.

Doesn't look absolutely terrible.
Mark's voice just doesn't click with me as Max Payne though.

Yeah, I just found out that FOX isn't allowing that Independent Film "Payne and Redemption" to use the Max Payne name or character anymore.

Laaaaaaaaaaaaame.

Yeah, Sin City reminded me of Max Payne

The only part about Max Payne I didn't like was the comic strip story, and now they are making it into a movie. A PG-13 movie no less.

This movie is going to suck.

EDIT: the trailer looks ok/cool though
