Max texture size for cs:s and hl2 ?

Hey yall!
Just wondering whats the max size i can have my texture for ccs or hl2.
Iv seen some people saying dont go above 512*512, is this the case or can the new engine handle more mabye 1024*1024 or above?

It handles up to 2048x2048 but if you use it remember to make a 256x256 version for the DX7ers, a 2048 texture scaled down to 256 wont look too nice
