I finally downloaded Maya PLE and I'm ready to learn.
So I start the program and don't know where to begin.
I'm new to 3D modelling so I was wondering if anyone know really simple tutorials for Maya. I'm only interested to learn how to model objects, such as weapons and stuffs like that right now.

I'm downloading a few VTM's from 3dbuzz.com as I'm typing this.

oh and, any hints are welcome. :D

ugg, i always hear new people saying this. my advice is to start with the absolute basics. i didnt start gun models until i had got to grips with simpler models and had got the techniques pretty much down. also, dont rush into larger projects. look at reference pictures and plan a few different ways of doing parts, it keeps things tidy and could be helpful in the long run.

...yes, i know i sound like an old fart

Man, the simplemaya costs money and the other highend3d.com those tutorial seems advanced.. :bounce:

@old fart :p
Ok.. got any link with for the basics? :p
I just don't want to learn something I wont use in gun modeling.. and I don't know what I need to learn so..

anyways, thanks for the replies :farmer:

Reaaad :)

at this point all you need is the maya VTM's and a ton patience

First of all, a real modeller isn't dedicated to just guns (you'll never get a job doing just guns, for one), secondly, you'll learn the fundamentals of Maya by doing the tutorials, and you need those for just about every tutorial. Thirdly, if you don't have the determination to do even the most basic tutorials, how do you expect to learn how to model (even just guns) well?

well said, well said. it's true with all modeling programs require that you start with basics, learning how to create and manipulate primitives. and then move on to more advanced aspects. Modeling may not be high art, but it's definatley a very difficult thing to start out and most people will never have the patience to learn. from your constant "i don't wanna learn what won't be ued in gun modeling" attitude i'd suggest giving up and learn how to make maps if you want to get into modding

yeah, there are some free tutorials on simplymaya that really helped me and i only started 2 weeks ago :) they cover the basics pretty well, go on the alias wavefront website as itll help also

"> I just don't want to learn something I wont use in gun modeling.. and I don't know what I need to learn so.."
Yeah, that was kind of dumb to say:( You 'should' want to learn everything:( Thats why im starting on character faces rather than guns becuase no company will hire you just to do weapon modeling.

I know, I'm learning them..

I'm not going to start on a wep tutorial untill I learned the basics

I respect Fenrics oppinion, and the others that are familiar with this. :p
Too bad 3dbuzz don't have as many Maya vtm's as they have 3dsmax.. :x

omg...... why dont you ppl wait to try XSI HL2 EXP? It has ALL the tools you need and more! its retarded not using it, not to mention VALVE choose to go with XSI for a damn good reason. nuff said.

actually they do, but you have to be a star community member (meaning you have to try really hard to learn maya and search the forums to get answers, 3dbuzz keeps track of all you activity and if they deem you a contributing helpful member, they will give you access to the advanced maya VTM's)

you can also pay 3dbuzz 35$ a month and get better access,, even then though you can't access the higher level VTM's without first finishing the classes and getting your assignments marked,, which is actually a really good idea

what do you mean its retarded not using it?! modeling programs are all about preference i think max sucks so i use maya, doesnt mean max actually sucks, just I dont like it.

and Valve have said that they're releasing plugins for Max (not sure about other packages).

So explain again why it's retarded, RMachucha?

I mean, Carmack doesn't use Windows for most of his engine development, so are we all retarded for using it?

Modelling packages always are and always will be, a case of personal preference. Absorb this fact, and move on.

they're releasing plugins for both maya and 3dsmax,, XSI is obvious

They recently changed their policy because they want a community that helps out each through their forums, classes etc.. What ended up happening was a lot of people became members, downloaded all their VTMs killing buzz's bandwidth and probably ended up not even using them.. So what they did was make a tracking system that rewards people who help out others, and use searchs before asking questions that have probably already been asked before...

But star movies are really advanced so say you want to get all 7-8 CD's of the UT2k3 development VTM's (#6 is pure gold btw), you have to sign up for their masteringunreal course (www.masteringunreal.com) and they will let you download the tests incrementally,, IE, you have to do all the quizzes an projects for CD#1 then get them marked by someone at buzz and they let you download the 2nd cd and so on

if you go to the download section at buzz there are 3 columns that indicate what you need to download the vtm (nothing, star member, member sponsor)

PiMuRho: Whats up with the name calling you tool?

is my name not legible enough for you to distinguish there isnt a second "H"?

PiMuRho: Whats up with the name calling you tool?

Anyone else see the irony in that?

Name calling? You were the one that called people "retarded", I believe. However, show me an example of my "name calling" and I'll be happy to apologise for it. Then you can do the same for calling me a "tool". Sound fair?

As for your name, I apologise for getting it wrong. Get over it.

as you wrote it: RMachucHa, if you dont know, this means something not pleasant in spanish.... could be said as an insult aswell, not only that, but its common courtesy to at least spell someones name correctly.

About the Retarded part, all i said is its retarded not using XSI, if you take that as an insult, sry, but that isnt going to change the facts.

I don't speak Spanish. I apologise for any offence caused, despite it being unintentional. Yes it is common courtesy to spell someone's name correctly, but we all make mistakes.

No. Wrong. You see, what you're expressing here is an opinion not an established fact. You think it's retarded, other people disagree.

As I said, choice of modelling package is personal preference
