Anyway, I'm not sure what the exact size of my monitor is, does anyone know how monitor sizes are judged?

Is it horizontally, vertically or corner to corner?

It's diagonally.

Whatever size the monitor is on the box it is really 2" smaller..they measure it from the actual corner of the plastic/metal/whatever to the other corner, not the actual screen which is kind of confusing.

E.g a 17" monitor = 15" - 19" = 17" etc...

Yeah, you have the monitor size itself, then the viewable area, for flat screens it's usually 1" smaller or less for the viewable area.

Measure from the base to the tip. That is how you measure it.

Now if you're attempting to measure the girth, then simply wrap the measuring tape around it.
