Melee?

How difficult, in terms of getting melee fighting to work fluidly and accurately, would it be to write melee combat?

I'd also like opinions of how melee fighting should be done, if that's the main concept behind the mod.

Someone said that they played a game where swining your mouse would swing your weapon, and I thought that this was sort of complicated to get used to. I thought about doing a combo hitting system, where one successful strike could be followed by another, just using the left mouse button to attack whatever weapon was at hand.

What I really want to strive to avoid is a counter-strike knife match, going in and out to hit someone. Suggestions or comments or threats welcomed.

They do a really good job with first person melee combat.
 
Would it be possible to have the weapons as like... a physicly simulated bar swinging through the air? Depending on which way the guy is traveling with his mouse it should swing that way. Then shouldent you be able to clash with people if they collide?
 
Complex melee systems are doable for single player games, but when it comes to multiplayer, the source engnine isn't built for melee & latency. Sorry, but that' just how it is
