MEMMORY is this a great DEAL or what

any ram over 1024meg is complete useless, you will get absolutely no advantage going above 1024.

1gig is fine, ESPECIALLY for hl2. granted i'm only running it at 1024x768, doom3 runs excellent on all settings on high (not ultra, duh..) with 4x aa (or af, i forget which one) and i only have a 9800pro. i messed around for a few minutes today and the peak mem usage of the game was about 350megs. windows+progs uses on average about 350 megs, so i've still got around 300 megs free playing the game....and hl2 will be less demanding.

for hl2....i see no reason, now or in the next year or two to have more than a gig, although i'm sure if you're doing other things that need ram you might have use for it. the ONLY way i could think of it using it is if you have 2+gisg of ram plus a next-gen (we're talking vid cards that don't exist yet) vid cadr with 256-512mb of onboard memory AND a 64bit processor...and this is all only when hl2 supports 64bit in the future, which they've said is a possibility. and even if you had that, it probably wouldn't look all that much better than on a 32bit system with a dx9 vid card and 1gig of ram.

(the only thing now that might use that much ram is doom3 on ultra, which uses an x800whatever or gf6800 with 256mb memory nicely...and doom3 on ultra can easily use a graphics card with 512mb onboard memory...which most end users don't have, anyway)

so that's the long answer.

short answer: no.

You should only buy RAM when your system can use it.

For instance, in gaming, there is no game that uses more than 1 GB of RAM. Period. Not Doom 3, not Far Cry, not HL2.

However, if you need it, you will benefit from having the extra RAM. Anything is faster than using your Hard Drive's page file. On a side note, a RAM upgrade is starting to look tasty. Especially when I can make Windows XP use 700 Megs of RAM when I am doing homework.

Doom 3 would use more than a gig of ram with it's "Extreme" texture mode....(the one that requires a 512mb vid card lol)
