Memory errors... 9800 Pro by any chance?

There seem to be a lot of people having frequent memory-related crashes in HL2, something like "The memory which was referenced at <hex> by module <hex> could not be 'read'."

I get this quite a lot with HL2 but I also had it with Call of Duty, and I've also had major problems with C&C Generals crashing out with a 'serious error'. I think this is related to my Radeon 9800 Pro card which seems to be overheating - I'm on my second card and the memory errors became much, much less frequent with my old one when i fitted an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer heatsink, took the side off the case and opened the window next to my PC.

I know Valve suspect this is a memory timing issue, especially where people are only experiencing it very infrequently. However, if you're getting it a lot and you have a 9800 Pro with a stock cooler on it, I'd recommend you look into upgrading the heatsink. Anyone else having similar probs with their 9800 Pro?

Nope, mine's running fine. Sorry about your luck tho man!

:flame: Got the same problem, got a 9800 Pro.... tried wiping and re-installing Steam, same problems, tried re-formatting my HDD and re-installing EVERYTHING, same problem....

Those memory errors are caused by bad ram, or ram that is being overclocked and is not happy about it.

it's not the video card, and try posting in the correct forum, it's not that hard to read the descriptions.

If the card was overheating, it would be freezing your comp, or producing artifacts. NOT producing system memory errors.

I've been getting it too, except it's my Radeon 9600 Pro AIW, however it only happens after closing/changing certain maps...

?

I have a 9800pro, no problems. You have RAM errors.

Same here, no problems whatsoever with my stock cooling Hercules 9800 Pro, and the fan isn't in great nick on mine either, but it does have a nice blue neon light round it. :)

Well I'm using a GeForce4 MX440, and I can honestly tell you its working fine (bar frame rate issues with many people on at same time)

That does not sound like a graphics card problem but a ram problem. I had very simmilar probs with Warcraft 3 when I got a new RAM stick last year, I switched the sticks round and then it was fine. (there were errors on on of the RAM sticks - but the way the RAM was used the other way round meant that these errors were no longer significant enough to cause problems)

To check if it is your RAM is ok use this program:
http://www.memtest86.com/

I suppose overheating could be a problem - check your temeprature and make sure you are using latest OFFICIAL drivers and that you are not overclocking. But then again, it's probably your RAM - there seems to be quite a lot of dodgy RAM around, I'll never buy crucial again!

BTW - I have a 9800Pro and I have had no problems at all. :)

I've got stock RAM timings, my video is not overclocked (also a Hercules 9800 Pro), and my system RAM is not overclocked (1 Gb PC3200 Corsair XMS dual channel)
Every time it has been checked with MemTest it has been fine. The only other thing would be for me to dig in and swap slots, might try that this weekend.
The only thing tweaked on my system is my CPU multiplier, got an Athlon XP 3000+ running at 2.29 Ghz, stock FSB

Well, I played through Half Life 2 once perfectly fine. Now whenever it tried to load "A Red Letter Day" (and always right there, at the same point during the "loading" progress bar) I get the "memory could not be read" error.

I have a 9800 Pro but it is not overheating at all. And again, I played through the game just fine first of all, and all variants of it run fine such as Deathmatch and CS:S.

i have had the memory error once since my card got fried by hl2. the card IS a 9800 pro, and since one day 2 saturdays back, it started producing artefacts, and i havnt overclocked it at all. some say it is overheating, but i dont know why it would start one random day, ah well, might have to sned it back to my suppliears...

i just bought a radeon 9800 pro aiw yesterday and when i run hl2 at 1024x768 it works fine, then, when i switch to 1600x1200 i get 2 errors and the game crashes, now i cant even start the game without "the instruction at <bleh> referenced memory at <bleh>. the memory could not be read.

2 days ago, when i was still running with my fx 5200 i had 0 problems.... im starting to remember why i've been boycotting ATI for the last few years :s
