Memory question

I was wondering if anyone could help me out? I have 2 sticks of 256mb ddr 333 ram. Can I replace one of the sticks with 512mb to give me 768mb in total or am I wasting my time.

I would just wait and save up for 2 512 sticks, really would be worth it.
