I need help making a purchase. Either Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater (PS2) or Chronicles of Riddick (PC)? I can't choose which one to get and I can't buy both since I'm short on cash.

Just some questions about the games?

1. How long is approx both games? Is MGS3 short as MGS2?

2. Is MGS3 worth the purchase?

Any help will be appreciated.:)

MGS3 is much longer than MGS2, imo, and more enjoyable. Its definatley worth the purcchase as well, great fun, great story and the new gameplay features help radically enhance what already is a winning formula.

Chronicles of riddick is a short game, but a brilliant one at that, and depending on what your specific tastes are...

If it were me, i'd go with MGS3.

Ouch, thats a hard one.

I don't know, it's all about what you like. I mean, did you enjoy the other Metal Gear Solid games? If so, then get MGS3. If not, go with Riddick.

MGS is longer than MGS2 but not by much. Having said that, you do play a lot more in the game than in MGS2, which had a billion cutscenes and codec sequences (which I love). I've heard that Riddick is very short also. I have not beaten the game yet so i can't officially comment.

Oh, and yes, MGS3 is worth the purchase if you like MGS. Be advised though, MGS3 is a PREquel but I'm sure you already knew that.

OMG you spoilt it for me!!! Joking. I enjoyed MGS a lot, but MGS 2 was good but not much replay value. I'm sorta leaning towards MGS3 at the moment. I might pick up Riddick later on. Thanks for your feedback guys, its appreciated.

Metal Gear Solid 3 has a much better story, more types of action, the CQC is awesome, the stealth mechanics are classic, and it's Solid Snake, voiced by David Hayter, who at least can convey some emotion and does a helluva lot better job voice acting than Vin Diesel does, which says something since Vin Diesel is better at voice acting than he is at actually acting

well i have both, once i finished riddick i never played it again, with mgs3 once i finished mgs3 i immediately began playing it again, this says alot as i havent bought a ps2 game in years(well 1 year) and have 2 or 3 games i still havent finished for my pc,mgs3 is also really fun to play(not saying cor isnt),the stealth is and gameplay is the best yet and the levels aren't as linear as before,mgs3 also has more replay value

cor has rather little shooting believe it or not and is very short, also some parts were quite boring imo and towards the end a certain enemy is unleashed which was a really POOR design choice imo which reminded me of far cry for its annoyance(you know what i mean ;) ),i'd go with mgs3 but mgs is my fav series so i'm biased :smoking:

I didn't think it was a poor design choice, it was just stretched out a little.

But yes, definatly MGS3.

i hated it,it was like far cry, constantly spawning aliens, terrible, really didnt enjoy it :sniper:

Thanks for your help guys. I've picked up MGS3. I'm about to play it. I'll tell you what I think of it. For some reason I'm not expecting the typical MGS gameplay.

Keep going through the first hour or so, don't be disheartened.

Havnt played Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater yet.

So, not sure.

good choice, post your impressions in the mgs3 discussion thread if you can :D

Definitely the right choice on Snake Eater... it's sucked me in these past number of days and won't let me go at all. Fantastic stuff.

Get MGS3. It's a bit longer than 2. MGS2 took me about 14 hours to complete I think while 3 took 17:41 the first time. Riddick is best suited on the XBOX & is pretty short AFAIK.

I am:
Just at the part after meeting EVA/Tatyana at the waterfall cave, going in to blow up the fuel tanks.
I've put in about 25 hours so far, and this is on Normal.

25 hours fs,you must trying to ghost then, finished it in 17 hours, the last few hrs are amazing

I just take everything really slowly - hide and watch enemy movements and their patrols, stuff like that.

I just knock 'em down or tranq 'em in the head & move on :E

Second time you play though is a lot easier & kinda more fun in its own way too because you are more familiar with how the game works & you have all of your camos from the start.

Tip: Take off the supressors while in bossfights. They are quite useless in those fights anyway thus you can save 'em for later when you "really" need 'em.

Hasn't anyone got a good thing to say about Riddick? I've not got past the tutorial missions yet, because of WoW but.... its not taht bad is it? (except Vin Diesel)....

no its very good but metal gear is 1 of those very few 'epic' games

also axyon since you mentioned you were at the cave scene i remembered that it has 1 of the funniest lines in mg history...so eva and snake are cosying up by the fire...

eva to snake:its so small..
snake to eva:it gets the job done  i was roflmao when i first heard that

lol im finding it harder this time..lol im stuck at the fury but thats coz im trying to tranq him to get the fire camo, also i found myself taking alot longer in areas, trying to totally avoid guards or use cqc(so awesome),like for example in the first area in the virtuous mission where you are introduced to the guards i musta spent about a hour in this section alone(i didnt know you could find the svd sniper rifle first time i played this area but found it now when i explored)

has anyone ghosted the abondoned building section where you get sokolov?so hard to remain unseen but im sure its achievable

Heheh, yeah, I'm glad to see Snake Eater carries on the funny dialogue sections from the other games. The dialogues between Snake and Sigint are the funniest though; the box and fork conversations are really hilarious.

yeah you should check out the easter eggs/secrets faq at gamefaqs,it has a list of all the funny radio conversations, you should call para-medic after getting a glowcap or if you already have, then after the 1st call, eat it and call her back, theres so many funny dialogues :E

edit:this 1 is great:Call SIGNT with the patriot equipped, you get some pretty amusing dialogue.

Call SIGNT with Zombie paint on, he and Paramedic will argue
about the face paint

Collect a Spatsa mushroom and call Para-Medic. After the
conversation, eat the Spatsa mushroom .After you wake up, call Para-Medic back.

Capture a coral snake alive, and call Para-Medic. When she is
telling Snake about the coral snake he will start to nod his head and gradually fall asleep.

Call anybody (particularly SIGNT) after snake's nightmare, and you
will get humorous responses

more hilarity:In either of the areas where you must dress up as a scientist, while dressed up as a scientist, equip the Crocodile Cap.

After the shootout with the Ocelots and passing through the swamp full of crocodiles, you'll reach the area with the electric fences and claymore mines. I went to the path on the right (the one with the quicksand) and interrogated the guard patrolling that area. He said: "On an island in the Southern swamp... a bizarre crocodile",anyone know what this means?

Awesome. I'm up to the part where the credits start James Bond-like. The game is pretty cool so far and I just love the cut-scenes. I rather watch the cut-scenes then play the game; its that good. I like the close-combat idea. What I really like about the game is how Hideo as concentrated on humour this time around.

I'm glad with my purchase, thanks guys. Will post more, as I play. But at the moment, I have to get some work done. =/

great  ,i really liked how they used the virtuous mission as basically a intro like the james bond movies, that was cool, the cutscenes are great, better than mgs2 although i get slowdown in the cutcenes at times :frown:

Doesn't surprise me that they slow down - the detail is so fantastic.

yeah you dont notice after awhile but its still there,it was weird when i went back to play cs:s,looked like it was on steroids it was so fast

I noticed small fps drops at times, but that didn't put me off one bit. I also picked up the shotty. Haven't used it yet, can't wait to blow away guards.

good choice whit MGS3

fav weapon is the sniper rifle, the svd, love taking people down with it not alerting the other guards, the perfect place for this is at that cabin before you face the end, just like in last years e3 trailer where snake snipes all the guards in the cabin without alerting the rest :sniper:

Jimbo: Yeah it's possible to ghost the entire game. I'm currently doing a No Alert game. It's rather hard actually. Have gotten past Pain now though so I'm on my way at least :)

Harryz: You really need to try the shotgun. Seeing 4 soldiers getting blown away by 1 shot is so funny :E They fly like 3 metres  Dunno if it was mentioned but have you played the other MGS games?

*hugs his Limited Metal Edition of MGS3*

Yep. I play MGS religously. MGS2, although I thought it was outstanding at the time, its kind of grown off me. All-in-all, MGS is probably one of the greatest gaming series. I'm now up to the part where I have past the electrical fence. Got to love Ocelot. Couldn't stop laughing when Snake was talking about the enhancements on the .45. Also EVA, is quite the seducer.:)

Edit - Also, I wanted to know, is there anyway to pause during cut-scenes. Because I hate it when the phone rings and you have to replay it all again. =/

Are you playing the PC version of MGS?

If you have the Playstation version, you could use an emulator. They normally have save states and a pause key. ePSXe is a good one. It can run games straight from the CD, so no need for dirty evil roms or anything.

Harryz: Nope no pause function on the PS2. The timer is even active during the "pause menu" aka Survival Viewer :( Found out about that the hard way while going to eat dinner.

Gotta love that Ocelot "roar" too if you have heard it :E And Eva sure is hawt yeah ;) Snake plus Sigint are very funny together too if you call him with some weird outfit on & weapon in hand.
