Microsoft has neglected PC gamers as it pushed forward with Xbox, but the advent of 360 will mark a defining moment for its gaming ambitions.

“We’re putting the ‘game’ back in Windows,” explained group manager Chris Donohue. “We’re over the hump with Xbox 360 so now ready to build Windows as a platform.”

With the X360 and PC platforms converging, the PC market should come back to life more than what it used to be :D Considering that sooo many companies were focusing on consoles, I'm glad to hear the plan :)

If this actually happens, i will be very pleased, will be good to see Microsoft return primarily to PC for a bit

Aww... see? They're not so evil.

Well, let's not jump to conclusions.

Their gaming department isn't bad at all... IMHO, it's one of the best. They have good mindsets and aren't exactly wanting to screw anyone over.

I think it's just a totally different mindset than what most people think of M$

Interesting stuff, but you had to see this coming, especially from the company whose sole purpose is to have every person on the planet a Windows user. (Insidious, if you ask me, to slowly turn console gamers into Windows users, but such is the way of the XBOX, 360 and beyond. Clever Microsoft devils!)

Still, hopefully this means that the days of dumbing-down games to make them easier to port to consoles are over because the systems that are being ported to are powerful enough in their own right.

Who are you and what have you done to Microsoft?

Windows Vista: Gaming Edition.

Tbh.

won't be shocked to see such a OS.
and Microsoft admitting they shafted PC gamers? is the sky falling? :O
oh well...maybe this is the turn us gamers need...for the good of it :p

Well, seeing as you can end all non-essential processes at the click of a button on Windows Vista, its pretty much already "gamer friendly"

But a gaming edition would be cool :D
I want money everytime someone mentions this now :)

It's about time too. Consoles were beginning to seriously stunt PC gaming’s growth.

Theres nothing wrong with consoles, but as my heart lies with PC im a happy camper (if it actualy bears fruit).

I just recently played MOH: European Assault on PS2. Playing an fps with a gamepad is like using a cactus dildo. Plus playing with that low res on a tv is really not fun. Though that won't be an issue so much in the future with hdtvs blah blah.

I still find pc gaming more immersive for many reasons i won't bother to list.

The 2 reasons why people are detered from PC gaming

1) Windows chews up a lot of resources, resources that should be used to accelerate games (PS2 and Xbox can handle games but with less resources, because they don't have a life drainer playing in the back)

2) Graphics and Sound Card companies sell their new products at Extortionist prices as opposed to competetive prices

MS flightsim 2008 please or whatever it'll be called, then I'll be happy. I cant wait, Ive got a feeling its gonna be something special.

Actually in Vista, they are putting more emphasis on Games.

Just like you have a "My Documents" "My Pictures" "My Music" now in the start menu (for most of you), there will be a section for Games that comes default.

Vista will keep games up to date, find info (trailers, ESRB ratings, etc), and some parents have the option of locking out games (for example, if as a parent you don't want your child playing any AO rated games, you can lock those out).

Oh, and the highest end edition of Vista comes with a utility that optimizes your machine for games. :)

Personally I think Vista is just bringing windows gaming down to the cosole standards; wiping out variation! In the future, we'll all just have a small white box that does everything, ever.

HDD will be a high density cubic crystal, apparently that'll be around in 20 years time, wouldn't be surprised neither

Why do you even think this?
If we have the ability to have windows automatically edit our configirations for our hardware to run at it's highest ability, plus the ability to manually do this for even higher results thats only allowing us to make our PC's faster for gaming.

If anything they are giving us more control than we had before. Thus pushing it away from consoles. Consoles don't give you any control in this sense.

There should be more compatability for linux games...I hate having to always boot into xp just to play my games :(

Its possible that they would start using streaming levels so that they can add polygons as well as bump-mapping and volumetric fog (the latter they've already done)

and how would this be smart decision from a companies perspective?

Anyway, if windows becomes open source and things they yeah we can have much more support on linux but that just wont happen. It would be the stupidest move anyone could do. You may not think so as an end user, but if you owned a software company...well the point is to make money.

What control? click a button and all your configs change? wtf is that?

God damn I hate all of this user friendly crap.

btw Any Linux user canno't be without Wine

Vista will include a Game Performance Tweaker. I'll see if I can find the article somewhere.

Here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/column/20050711/index.html

"The first and most comprehensive of the two features is a tool called the Windows System Assessment Tool (WinSat). This is essentially a benchmarking tool designed into Windows, which generates scores based on system performance. It will analyze the graphics subsystem, the processor, the memory, the hard drive and other critical components of the system and calculate a total score. This score can be used to compare your system performance to that of any other Longhorn system."
This isn't what I was talking about but something that I felt like posting.

Anyway:
"The system also retains individual and incredibly granular scores on each and every subsystem, and will instruct software components to activate, modify their own settings, or turn themselves off in order to optimize the software for the hardware. This means that, unlike any previous operating system, Longhorn will attempt to adjust its own parameters automatically, to make the most of the performance potential of your hardware.

WinSat will set up two configurations: one for general productivity applications, and one for games. As long as the game developers make the right software call, the system will optimize itself into a generic game configuration so you can approach the most optimized performance possible."

"They can also call up a screen that points out where your system bottleneck is, and suggest hardware upgrades that will correct system performance issues. The end result is that not only will advanced games play better on a wider variety of configurations, if there is a problem, the system will tell you what the problem is and what you need to do - or more generally, to buy - in order to correct it."

Now this is what will keep you from saying, "Omg windows is making everything to easy"
"You can also get access to the detailed scores that WinSat generates, and use them to manually optimize your system. While the automatic method uses a fixed set of parameters based on the average user, we all know that you are above average and have special needs and skills. Just as you can overclock your processor, you will be able to modify your system parameters to best optimize the score for how you work or play, and see what the individual and overall impact of those changes actually is. This last feature will definitely separate the men from the boys!"

Longhorn can offer what we really want, lets hope they get it right, id like to see something perfect from microsoft...is that too much to ask???

Microsoft move up a gear, come back to the pc...forget xbox

I think consoles will disapear in the future and all games will be dont on computers, OR computer add-ons.

I think you have it backwards. The consoles are going to take over for everything but business. If not completely then I imagine we will see something in between a console and a computer becoming the standard.

I can see it now - Requirements: 5 gigs of RAM, 20 Ghz CPU, 10 Terabyte HD, 1024 MB video card.

.......Or it would just come with more tools allowing you to do so much optimization you would be running it off a 10 year old comp ahhh!!

Anyway, besides that stupid thing I Just posted. This is what you must remember:
Yes Vista does have quite some recommended requirments. But it's not just Vista that will need more ram and things. Since were dealing with 64bit, that means every game will need about twice the ram just to achieve the same results we had before. The same went for 4 - 8bit 8 - 16bit 16 - 32bit. Now this may sound bad, but we are no longer stuck to a 4gig limit with 64bit.
