Underground nuclear power plants no bigger than a hot tub may soon provide electricity for communities around the world. Measuring about 1.5 meters across, the mini reactors can each power about 20,000 homes. (Please see below for an update)

Hyperion now has more than 100 orders for its modules, mostly from the oil and electricity industries. The first order came from a Czech infrastructure company called TES, which specializes in water plants and power plants. TES ordered six modules and optioned another 12, with the first planned to be located in Romania.

wiiii...i can now have my very own radioactive cloud...

"MOM, MOM....can i please have 25million dollars?"
"what for son?"
"to buy a mini nuclear reactor"
"why do you need one?"
"so i can play Stalker in real life with my friends"
"well...i'll give you the money only if you promise to do your homework"
"sure mom....you're really cool, mom! *runs to get fathers sawn off shotgun*"

Learn some nuclear safety or **** off with the Chernobyl reference. Sorry but the this thread has really struck a nerve.

Meanwhile these mini stations costs too much. Large structures would be far more efficient and not to mention safer.

i'm just kidding dude...why get so upset, did you have any relatives involved?

and besides i'm not implying that critical mass is involved in any of this.

Nothing like that. I just get tired of the masses not understanding a single thing about nuclear power. People who claim terrorism is an issue are hilarious though;

1. Look at France.
2. You could ram a jet plane into modern power stations and the net effect would be a dent in the wall.

oh...well ok.

but you realize i'm just joking with the reference, right?

nuclear power can be quite harmless if properly handled and controlled.
chernobyl was relatively safe, but of course those politicians/scientists that had to push it over the limit...****ing SOBs

Wow, this thread got some unexpected drama right off the bat.

$25 million is pretty cheap actually... considering we often pay way more than that to affect far fewer than 20,000 households worth of people.

That's like 8 million households just from one month of funding the Iraq war alone.

with the first planned to be located in Romania.

Stupid shit. We already have a damn nuclear power plant you stupid government, how about fixing it so it operates at optimum efficiency. Right now only one of the 3 reactors actually works.

I don't trust that source. Czech company TES is an electrical engineering company and they never wanted to buy that kind of thing (my friend work there) and there are no other informations about that kind of deal.

Their idea of mini nuclear reactor sounds pretty good and your references about Chernobyl are stupid fear mongering.

They didn't push it over the limit, they performed an experiment that ended up in a disaster due to the flawed construction of the reactor.

nope not exactly true...the experiment demanded that all neutron absorbing rods be removed despite the "manual" forbidding it. most security measures were deactivated.
Chernobyl was a disaster mostly made from stupid decisions and some bad luck...but i agree that the reactor type was not the safest one available but still, the reactor would work properly if the just did it by the book instead of performing such a dangerous experiment.

I'm going to buy one of these for our Party's HQ.
