Imagine our surprise to discover our former employee, now the head of Mini, has challenged us to a head-to-head race. As you surely know, Porsche has a long history of racing success, with more than 28,000 wins over the last 60 years. In our early days, we pitted ourselves against the giants, so we've been in your shoes.

But as you also know, Porsche doesn't race for fame, stunts or publicity. We race to challenge ourselves; we race to push sports car technology; we race to translate every win on the track to our cars on the road. While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we'll stick to racing the way we have over the decades. We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces. Mini Cooper (along with The Volkswagen Beetle) is one of those cars that I love to hate. I would love for this race to take place only for the mini to get creamed.

The only chance Mini would have racing Porsche is AutoX, and that just isn't going to work.

I could have told you.... even without knowing Porsche's response, that Porsche would refuse this challenge. Mini's challenge is very immature, but Porsche responded with class.

When I used to hang around the car-design community, every moron with a sketchpad would challenge me to design contests. Answering those challenges would have been a distraction from my goals with no rewards; a waste of time. The only competition I've ever cared about is the one that exists on a global scale.

Or lets say I'm at a bar talking to women... frequently other males will try to interrupt and compete. Sure, most of the time I know I could beat them at their game easily and put them in their place, but there is little benefit from doing that. For every douchebag I could put in his place, there are millions more. I am so used to ignoring that behavior I genuinely don't notice people talking trash, trying to start fights, disrespecting me, making fun of me, competing for 'my' girl, etc. Unless they get right in my face or touch me, they might as well not exist.

When you respond to a challenge... whether you win or lose, you validate the other person. Even if you beat someone 'superior' the only benefit is bragging rights, which bragging is severely annoying and drives people away.

The new mini commercial that has been on the internets is pretty awesome. Other than that, I've never been a fan.
