Hello everyone! I'm wondering is it possible to somehow minimize TF2 (or any other Source game) without having to wait like 30 seconds or more to maximize it again? For example I want to check something quickly on the internet, or something like that, which would would take 15 seconds, then I have to wait half a minute to be able to play the game again. (I know, I know, I have to be patient, or 30 secs is not that much, etc. but I don't like to wait.:|) This is true for all Source games, including HL2, TF2, CS:S. (and of course some other newer games, like Bioshock.)

Same thing on mine, and its nothing to do with HD activity either since I have loads of RAM.

The same thing here, and I have a brand new computer, so you can't blame the performance. :/

Try turning off the Steam community in-game. In my computer, with the steam community on, the maximizing time is around 15-20 secs, without it, its barely 5 seconds.
Connecting to servers is also 10-20 seconds faster.

Yeah it happens to me too, if I alt+tab out of a steam game it takes forever to get back in :(

Welcome to 2005

Source always had horrible alt-tabbing no matter what.

I thought people got over this.

Yeah, yeah, I know, but still... Valve should be asked if they could imrpove it somehow. You know... making our lives easier and stuff :)

Do source games have a run in window option? If so, alt tabbing will be instant.

It's because the window is running fullscreen :\

Although I've stopped WoW, i LOVED its maximized window fullscreen imitation feature. It's a window, but it fills the whole screen giving the appearance of a normal fullscreen application - but with none of the problems fullscreen applications have such as tabbing.

It would be a matter of running the game in window mode, disabling the windows GUI of the window, and placing it on the top of the window space at space 0,0 in same resolution = fullscreen application, all the benefits. (Gonna eat more resources though - windows will still render the desktop and everything behind the game then, but with a good rig, gimme that feature!)

Perhaps a hack is possible, that can position the hl2.exe window in front, and place it at 0,0. That would give the experience us alt-tabbers are looking for.
(If i had sufficient experience in windows programming, which i have non of sadly, i would make it myself - there's no reason it shouldn't be possible)

(Another great feature about a false fullscreen, is that you can see the game running in the 3D tabbing and when hovering above the process line button of the game, enabling you to check if you gotta pay attention - in Vista that is)

For now you can run it in windowed mode, perhaps conceal the process bar, and try to place the window so only the game is in the screen. Not optimal at all though :\ And the window will most likely reposition itself at every game start.
