Misleading cpu requirements in today's games + a laptop question.

1) The min req cpu is 1.2 ghz but thats misleading since some processors with low ghz are much faster than high ghz versions. Example is that a athlon 64 fx 1.8ghz or pentium m dothan 2.0ghz is faster than a p4 3.4 easily. Do you think todays games should or could make it more specific when listing a cpu req?
2) I will be playing on my laptop and will only try to run the game at 1028x768. If I set most things to medium, what averge fps do you predict for me?

1.4 pentium m(early version, 1mb L2 cache/400 fsb)
mobility radeon 9600 64mb(2400 in 3dmark03)
512 pc2700 ram

No, people just hafta be more educated

although i agree some companies ghz levels are a little misleading but hey their computers

I have a AMD 2000+ XP Athlon (which is an equivalent to an intel 2GHz) but actually runs at 1250MHz. If it wasn't for my graphics card, doom3 and farcry would run at peak performance. HL2 will be the same. You will find if you have an intel 2GHz or the AMD equivalent, you will be able to run HL2 with no problem. I don't have much info on the 64bit processors though. But its down to the number of transistors on the processor (more the better)

Thats because they are different architechures :S You're comparing a 64 bit to a 32 bit, of course its faster its running twice the calculations per second than a 32bit!

wow that is totally incorrect. 64-bit means that it supports running 64bit code (i.e. wider registers) not that it is 2 32-bit instructions at once. But the A64 is much faster per clock than p4 or even Athlon XP due to architechtural improvements and onboard memory controller.

edit: I would expect 30-40 fps at best but can't be sure since no benchies of hl2 around yet, only cs:s. May want to try the video stress test if you can though, will give you a rough idea.

No it's not. For a start, just because it's 64-bit does not mean it can do twice as many calculations per second than a 32-bit processor. (you work at Best Buy right? If not.. you should)..

for the last time ghz DONT MATTER! Intel trys to make it look that way but for god sakes its blatantly obvious that AMDs with slower clocks are better...

*sigh*

AMDs are for games
Pentiums are for heavy load shit (IE video rendering, Music editing, etc...)

of course AMDs are going to run faster at lower clocks! They are good for one thing! games.

*EDIT* Laptop question: I'll be guessing under 50 frames

My p4 2.8, 9600XT 512 ram runs at 40-50 frames...

the 2000+ should run at 1.67 Ghz there guy...

It's not misleading, the requirements are based off P3/Athlon, "or equilivant".

ok...here is the result of my laptop

Intel P4 3.06GHz (533fsb) - performance is equal with a Pentium M 2.0GHz
512MB Ram (PC2700 , Dual-channel)
ATI Radeon 9700 with 64MB
the rest is not important

i attached screen of the settings and the result!

i predict 10-20fps less on your laptop. (nice estimate, huh?!)

Ghz simply is how fast it can compute something.
It is not how much though. INTEL compute a low amount of things but at a super fast rate.
AMD compute a large amount of things just a slower rate. Thats all.
I think anyway..
AMD i believe sees no total reason to mass out higher speeds, as it creates more heat and it dosn't really need to be faster..

Intel on the other hand is trying to make there god damn 4ghz Pentium 4.

I think thats correct anyway....please correct me if im wrong.
