is it possible for me to use a 256 stick and a 512? and if not can i use 2 different brands of 256?

thanks.

Although its not preferred usually you can use two different sizes. As for the brands if it is the same DDR or what not im pretty sure it will be fine. Only prob is i don't think you can use Dual channel....

Technically speaking, using RAM that is 256 and 512 in size won't bugger up you computer. However there are a few things that you will have to look for:

Can they both accept the same voltages and FSB

You can't mix and match the RAM if one is, say, DDR1 and the other is DDR2 technology. Usually the packaging for RAM indicates this. If not the packaging, check what motherboard you have as that is a real good indicator as to which type of RAM it can take.

There are a few benchmarking tools you can use to find out the type of RAM that you are using.

My current favourite is PC WIZARD (download at top-left hand corner of their website)

If you are unsure about using the two sticks together, then use the above app and provide us information on the motherboard you are using and the RAM you currently have and the RAM you plan to use with it.

As long as it is the same kind of memory (DDR vs DDR2) then it should work. Did you just have 1 stick of memory before?

Although sometimes computers dont like different configurations and they will beep and not start. Just remove the memory you just added and it should start up again.
