I would like to learn modding, but at present, I am a rank newbie.

I am a fan of CTF type games and would be interested in seeing a mod whereby there are two teams, everyone armed with gravity guns (not the one that can grab people). At either end of the map, is a goal or hoop. At the start of the map, in the center, is one of those electrified spheres like you see along the coast road in HL2. That would serve as the "ball".

When the map starts each team would race to the ball and then, using the gravity gun, pass it back and forth to their teammates as they advance down the field, finally to shoot the sphere through the goal and score points. Of course the opposing team would try to prevent this. In addition, there might be head crabs or man hacks wandering around the map for an extra challenge.

Besides the gravity gun, other weapons would be available throughout the map. If you kill the "ball carrier", he drops the ball. It would take teamwork to score, because a defender could be guarding the goal and use his gravity gun to snatch the ball from mid air. Obviously, this "goal keeper" must be eliminated before the "ball carrier" shoots to maximize his chances for scoring.

Finally, the goal itself should be big enough so that a long shot is possible, but not too big. The game would end after a set time limit or fixed number of goals is scored.

I didn't see any announcements of such a mod, but I think it would be fun. I would do it myself, but I have no modding skill as yet, although I want to learn.

I imagine the only coding necessary would be to assign the goals to a particular team and keep track of the score. It doesn't sound like a very complicated mod (at least to me, given my lack of knowledge of mod making).

Just a thought

That sounds like a lot of fun!
I'm a newbie myself, and the more i learn the more i realize i need to learn.
Creating a mod by yourself calls on many different skills. Think about the textures and general look of the map you're going for. This is something you could begin working early in your modding.
The harder part would be the coding for the game dynamics, like scoring. (unless coding is something you're keen to, i'm not)
I'm in the process of fleshing out my own idea(shhhh, it's a secret=) while also learning about modelling, texturing, triggers, sky boxes, cubemaps, etc..
It seems like a bit of a steep learning curve, but things are making more sense every day. And i'm REALLY excited about the source engine! If there was ever a time to learn mod-making, this is it!
Good luck!

sounds a lot like bombing run in UT 2003 and UT 2004.. great idea! I know nothing about modding but I hope somebody or some mod team can take this mod into concideration :)

kinda reminds me of the film "rollerball". except not rolling about lol
