Hi guys,

I have been reading this forum for quite some time now, and I think this is a good time as any to start contributing.

First of all, I am an experienced developer / project leader for a Software company that has nothing to do with the game industry. I mod because I love games like any of you does.

After reading a lot of posts from guys with good mod ideas (others not so good ;) ), it becames obvious what is the common mistake I can find on most of them. The lack of serious planning! This has been posted by other experienced users, and links have been made to articles that stress this.

So this is my 2 cents. A Microsoft Project file for an hl2 mod I am planning. It should be a good starting point for those of you less keen on this matters.

Hope it is of some use to anyone. Please feel free to comment and alter. If you make some chages please post it back.

...sorry for the long post...

Hi... i was wondering if you could repost the attachment as another file type. I don't have Microsoft Project. Thanks.

Also...I'm interested in starting a mod and you sound like you know what you are doing. Check out my thread under the Help Wanted Section. My thread is called something like "Help Wanted, Ender's Game Mod".

Ok, for those of you who do not have Project, here goes an exported table to html.

... and as soon as I hit submit I'll check out your topic. ;)

But that's part of the fun!!! Multiplayer modding is taken WAAAY too seriously now a days, cause most people doesnt really see the start, just the end, thinking they compete with games. (SP is of course a different matter, those are in minority though)

For example, DC for BF1942 is an awesome project, that making from the ground up would require nothing more than a full team of game developers.

What about the first version? Crummy iraqies in german disguise, an Apache that could hardly fly, a few tanks and a few weapons... In WW2 maps. Simple as that. It was by far the funniest version of DC ever made :)

CS was exactly the same.

There is too much pressure now... Hell some mods are nearing *movie* productions in their scope and ambition. Of course planning is a neccessity then. But if I where to make a mod (say a CS clone), I would just state the facts: We need a couple of levels, we need two characters and we need a couple of weapons. Whip together a fun playable alpha. Then we work from there.

I agree with dawdler. All the tight planning and pressure takes out the fun.

I'd say more, but I'd only be repeating him :P

Ok guys, I guess you are right.

There should be 2 types of mods. The "made for fun" and the "semi pro". lol.

Nonetheless don't forget that some of this guys see mod making as the start of a carrer in game development. If you have ever applied to a job position in this business you know that they ask for examples of work done, and the more professional looking they are, the best chances you got.

But still... you are right. Mods should be something fun to do with our geek friends. lol.

By the way, shouldn't we all help with the open source mod that is posted in this forums??? ;)
