I've been thinkin a bit about how a lot of the mods out there are very similar to eachother in general terms of running around shooting people. I was thinking that it might be a good idea to just make one big modable mod where the mapper can make all the decisions. Sorta like how TFC gave a big open ended entity system. Basically the only rules of the mod are that there are players and guns. From that the mapper can determine the teams or lack-thereof, the classes, their names and their specifications such as speed/health, the models which each class uses, the weapons they have, they could even customize these weapons, just assign a model, a projectile type, a rate of fire, ammo type etc. Mappers can choose where and when players respawn, specific gravity or frictions, all of the standard customizations of most mods. With this kinda system most of the mods out there could be made by mapper with no extra coding needed at all. Only certain beyond the standard games like NS or HLrally would need any customized coding.

That could be done but all "mods" done with that mod will look the same after some time... and you loose all the fun making the mod :)

I dont like shooters anymore, i want something new.

But, yeah... I think this can be a good idea.

I think flexibility is quite important, but the reason for a MOD is to make whatever gameplay easy for people to access. As far as I'm concerned, HL2 is going to do an excelent job making it easy to mod as you describe.

HL2 is already that modable mod you speak of, and you have to admit that its in the small refinements of shooters that seperate games like CS and Tac-Ops and DoD

Sven-Coop does this kind of thing very well, and i expect they'll expand upon it in SC2.

I think that's a great idea :D

Or a really cool idea I just got: Every map has "variable" entities linked to server options. So there are sort of general entity types, like weapon spawns, effects, etc. Then you could have a pre-made database of player models, weapons, entities, maps, effects, etc. When you make a server, you would choose from a selection of things for each category, so every server would be a different game. You could choose WW2 maps and players, then add futuristic weapons and crazy effects. Or try a medieval-era server with WW2 weapons! :naughty:
