Model mutations?

Okay for my next question. How could one go about creating a mutating model?

example:

Lets say my character has the ability to transform his hand into a large sword. I would like to have the same kind of effect as the liquid terminator in t2.

This kind of mutaion would go for other things as well, like a hand turning into a gun or cannon. ect.....

can this be done? Well for a mod anyways.
 
yup it can be done, but you'll likely need the same point count and point order in both models to perform the morph and save it as a sequence to use in the mod.

Could do it manually.. but meh lot of extra work
 
Or just make an animation where it moved into the other object. Also you would need animated textures. It could be a tedious job.
 
unless the texture was really simple. Like a basic color.
