models mean next to nothing

This is something that I've been thinking about recently and I felt like sharing.

When you get down to it, all these renders and models don't mean anything. I can't speak for all of you, but when a mod is actually playable in some form, I have NEVER not played it because of ugly models/textures.

Yes people may complain about them, but all these focus that's placed on models and renders is silly. Yes, that's all that can be shown and debated now, but once HL2 is out and the mods are actually in development, and then being made, it won't matter to most people what the guns look like if the mod is worth playing.

anyway, that's just a mini-rant.... I feel for all of the cool sounding mods that get passed over by the average joe because thier models don't look as nice as another mods.

I agree... but only to a certain extent. I do hate to see decent ideas passed over because of the modders make shitty models/textures/skins, but the graphics play an important part of the game and can't be ignored. So, if you want to make a great (as in how well it is accepted by the gamers) mod you'll need models that, at worst, aren't bad enough to distract the players from the gameplay. On the plus side, if the working concept of your mod is fun enough you should be able to draw in a talented modeler or two to help you overhaul the graphics.

It's just a reflection of the time the mod makers took to improve the quality of the game as much as possible. Usually that means it's better.

That being said. Yes, gameplay is everything.

I mean yeah, ok, for my mod http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=39977 im not going to create any models or anything new graphicaly but thats only because im learning.

However, in the long run I dont think people would appreaciate still playing with Quake1 models...

Ach, I dunno, I supose you could get used to it. Dam that hurts my brain even trying to work it out

Heavy Rifle (shamelessly borrowed from CS)

The Eradicator itself just used an enlarged HL Robo model, and moved like it was in Riverdance.

Immense fun to play, though.
