Modem Players?

First off, I have broadband (3Mbps down).. but a friend of mine only has a 56K modem (broadband not available in his area). He has DirecWay (satellite) which would be hell on multiplayer (horrible latency since it bounces off a sat).

Is anyone running CS:S using a modem - and if so is it at all playable?

Did you read the article Chris_D wrote? If not that's OK, since you're a newbie.

The gist, CS:S runs better on 56K than CS 1.6. It really never gets more than 3KB/sec both ways (incoming/outgoing)

Nope - didnt see the article. I did a search but came up with mostly pointless threads (like who has the crappiest computer). I also checked for any sticky thread about this.

Thanks for pointing this out.

EDIT: Someone wouldnt happen to have a link to this article?

Im on a 56k and i play fine.
NEVER PLAY GAMES ON A SATEALITE.
They have to travel up into space (Going at the speed of light) its nearly 1 second. There like 65 thousand miles above space.
Then coming down.
Thats like 1000-2000 ping.

what pings are 56k players getting online? i remember i used to get about 140-160 if only 8 players and maybe 180-200 for more. is it still similar because it was very playable like that.

CS:S runs just as good or better compared to CS 1.6. I must admit Valve has surpassed my expectations for the netcode, unlike a certain company first letter I last letter D. 4 player DM doesn't support 56k? What kind of idoicy is that?

Remember the early days of online gaming? Man, I used to play online with a 28.8k modem. The days when literally no one had broadband. Those were the days....

Going back even more, I have extremely fond memories of playing modem games of Duke Nukem 3d with a mate on my 14.4k modem. Used to piss off my parents because it would take up the phone line. This was before I ever had the internet. We played modem games of D3D and Command and Conquer. Later we moved onto Red Alert, then Total Annihilation. Man those were fun times.
