I've been disconnecting from the internet a lot lately. The problem used to exist in too many connections on the router. The router would crash, and thus disconnecting and requiring a reboot. (The router is somewhat notorious for crashing with heavy connection loads: the D-Link DI-624)

Problem solved by lowering connections to utorrent.

Now I'm disconnecting whilst utorrent is closed, so that cancels that possibility. It occurs in playing games, surfing, anything.

When the connection went out not to long ago, I wanted to check if it was the router or not, to see if we might need to get a replacement as I'm fed up with rebooting the router and modem. I pinged the router IP. Everythings fine, the router is up, and I can access the admin panel as well. Must be the modem.

The modem is the original modem we got (for free) when we subscribed to Bellsouth's DSL plan. Around 3-4 years old. We're now on a 3Mbit connection from 1.5, and I'm wondering if the modem is starting to break down, finally. I tried looking up some information about it on Google, but there's next to nothing about it. And the results are mainly internet sales.

Does anyone have, used to have, or know anything about the Westell Wirespeed series? There's not even any information on the Wirespeed on the Westell website. And any suggestions for replacements, fixes, or anything else is much appreciated.

Here's the logical topology of our network. * is wireless
Code:
PC  -\
PC  - > D-LINK DI-624 > (Bridged) WESTELL WIRESPEED > {Internet}
PC* -/
If you need more specifics let me know.

My cable ISP can see if the modem has disconnected often or if it is their service. Maybe give yours a call. Otherwise you could buy another and test it out. Return it if it doesn't help.

Your setup (PC->Router->Modem) is typical.

I read on the website that their modem selections are configured specifically for their internet services, but since I only use the modem to gain access to the DSL line, not as my primary router (or DNS, DHCP, Firewall, etc either), it should be OK to go with any?

I'm also noticing the problems are tending to come when the wireless access is being used. So now I'm starting to lean towards the possibility the wireless is giving me these problems. After googling a bit, seems to be a fairly common one.

Yeah, I've heard of many people saying their wireless went out before. Disable wireless? Get wireless access point to connect to router or switch?
