Well basically this is based off of a dispute I had with a (fairly stupid) christian acquaintance I have, who bet me I couldn't devote myself to the worship of this stuff. If anybofy knows if there are any modern forms of this that have specific practices and standards I could look at, that would be super helpful.

Yeah, you pretty much just gotta listen to hardcore metal. They make songs about Odin and shit so its pretty much your prayers and hymns.

There can be only one God, right? That makes sense!

Well, aside from heavy metal fans you have still some neopagans in unholy Europe.

Amon Amarth is what you want good sir.

Nice viking metal right thar.

Neopagans are lame.
But I also think it's a shame that widespread "paganism" was wiped out from Europe by Christianity.

Okay, what you want to devote yourself to is called the Ásatrú, which means the faith in æsir. The æsir are the norse gods. It's officially recognized as a religion all over Scandinavia.

The basics:
Die in combat, then you go to valhalla and you get to eat meat from a pig that doesn't run out of meat, and drink mead from a horn that doesn't run out of mead.

You also need to sacrifice to the aesir. Inanimate objects, animals or humans. It's all good.
If you want to sacrifice a human or animal to Odin, you need to strangle them.
If you don't have a human or animal present, food or wine etc is good sacrifice. Libation is an excellent way to do it.

Blot is both a way to sacrifice and a festivity where you gather friends for food, drink and folk music, most preferably outside in nature. It doesn't have a specific date, you decide when to Blot things up.

Other than that, stick by good ethics, stay true to your word, defend your honor

The nine noble virtues of the Asatru:
1. Strength is better than weakness
2. Courage is better than cowardice
3. Joy is better than guilt
4. Honour is better than dishonour
5. Freedom is better than slavery
6. Kinship is better than alienation
7. Realism is better than dogmatism
8. Vigor is better than lifelessness
9. Ancestry is better than universalism

Nine charges:
1. To maintain candour and fidelity in love and devotion to the tried friend: though he strike me I will do him no scathe.
2. Never to make wrongsome oath: for great and grim is the reward for the breaking of plighted troth.
3. To deal not hardly with the humble and the lowly.
4. To remember the respect that is due to great age.
5. To suffer no evil to go unremedied and to fight against the enemies of Faith, Folk and Family: my foes I will fight in the field, nor will I stay to be burnt in my house.
6. To succour the friendless but to put no faith in the pledged word of a stranger people.
7. If I hear the fool's word of a drunken man I will strive not: for many a grief and the very death groweth from out such things.
8. To give kind heed to dead men: straw dead, sea dead or sword dead.
9. To abide by the enactments of lawful authority and to bear with courage the decrees of the Norns.

All in all, it's a very individualistic religion, where your own morals and good judgment are to be relied upon.

Metal is nothing about what the skalds represented!

Jerks!

No, but with Viking metal, every song, every album, every word is about it though. It's really ****ing awesome BTW.

But there are often many great values to be followed. And it can give people courage and strength in difficult times.

But beyond that, I don't think it is healthy to believe in things that have no basis of proof. That's what crazy people do.

the freedom, in a sense the birthright, to choose, enjoy, and believe in whatever for no other reason than it resonates with you and brings you quality of life is one of the greatest parts of being human in my opinion

+1
OK, good, I like that. But when those beliefs in 'that something' trample on the beliefs of other people, it creates serious issues.

Even worse when the other side believes something that contradicts the other, which is what we have today with religion.

This kind of issue can lead to unresolvable conflict, with wars that last centuries, and are still left unresolved after all.

To me that's unhealthy and crazy.
