Mods for Half life 2

Hi this is a question that has been bugging me for some time but if you purchase hl2 through steam (as opposed to retail) can u still play all the mods that come out not just the ones Valve endorses.

er, for Half Life 1 or half life 2,

unless you know of any half life 2 mods avaliable at the time yes you can still play it.
Just pop it in your Half Life 2 Folder and it'll show up in custom games.
